Her voice was a soulful alto and fused well with Paul’s accompaniment on the grand piano. But I would’ve been even more impressed if she hadn’t draped her hands over his shoulders as she sang or kissed him on the mouth when the song finished.

Paul took a cloth out of his pocket and wiped his lips.

Linux laughed. “Sorry, that was a lot of gloss.”

“You have a visitor,” Laurence called out behind Paul. He turned his head and raised a brow at my pursed mouth as I approached him. He grabbed my waist, tugging me down on his lap, where he kissed me deeply.

I smiled at him when he broke away. That’s the sort of greeting I’d like every day.

“That’s better,” he murmured, his gaze scanning my face. “This is Nadia.”

“Hello, Nadia. So nice to meet you,” Linux said with an odd amount of enthusiasm infused in her voice. It seemed to contradict her eyes, but then, I didn’t know her, so I shouldn’t speculate.

Mickey flashed white teeth as he shook my hand.

Linux clasped her hands together. “We’re working on one of Paul’s amazing songs. Aubrey’s violin complements this piece. Did you know Aubrey?”

I shook my head. I could not believe she thought I’d be with Paul if I’d known Aubrey. “I never met her.”

“Well, Aubrey was an amazing violinist and producer. Wasn’t she, Paul? A regular powerhouse.”

Paul sighed and helped me back to my feet. “Aubrey was the best violinist I ever heard. Her music was sublime. She loved music, like me.”

Linux touched her chest. “Like me, too. I can’t help but dedicate this music to her.”

“Thank you, Linux. That’s thoughtful of you,” Paul told her, and she beamed at him.

“Paul says you’re talented as well?” Her voice went up an octave as she turned to me.

“I design clothes. I’m a student at the School of Design in New York City.”

“Did you create what you’re wearing?” She eyed my clothes with apt interest.

“No,” I said. “It’s Voltaire.”

She laughed. “Of course not. That’selegantlymade. I mean, you’re probably still in the learning stage since you’re in college.”

I hunched my shoulders. Why was she being so nasty to me?

“Nadia is very talented,” Paul said in a crisp tone. “You’ll remember meeting her one day.”

Linux gave Paul a wide grin. “I have no doubt.”

Paul blanked his face. “Excuse us.”

He rose and took me into the adjacent mixing room where a couple of attendants worked. “We’re having dinner with Bijou Star tonight.”

“Seriously?” I screeched, and he nodded, grinning.

She was a legendary singer, songwriter, and actress.

“Yes.” He kissed my lips. “I’ll be a few hours more yet, but you can show me your pictures and designs. You can stay here, or I’ll meet you back at the house.” He kissed my lips again. “You look sensational.”

The door opened, and a man in a business suit walked inside. “Paul, you have a call from New York.”

“I’ll be right back.” He kissed my forehead.

“I’m just going to make a call,” I told him and followed him out the door. My mom didn’t pick up, but I paused when I heard Linux’s voice.
