Xander ate a forkful and moaned. “Oh, yes. That’s the stuff. Where do you go after your first boyfriend is a famous billionaire? I mean, this place is amazing. You should probably get Paul to introduce you to his friends if you break up. Then you can maintain the style you’ve become accustomed to.”

“I’ll never get accustomed to living like this.” I thought about the spot in the closet. The following day, the housekeeper added a memory foam twin bed inside. No doubt she spied and told Paul about it, and he was trying to accommodate me until I told him.

“Have you met any of his friends?” Xander asked.

“I met a few celebrity friends,” I said and opened a bottle of wine.

“Those are work friends. I mean his confidants and family. What’s Jonas Crane like?”

I lifted my shoulders and turned my head.

Paul never shared his family. I hadn’t even been invited over to his home. Xander’s sympathetic expression made me feel worse.

“Maybe for men like Paul, meeting family means marriage. You’re new. You need to relax and give him time.”

But so much has happened already. My phone buzzed with a blocked number. “Hello?”

“I’m Tara with Spark Media.”

Click.I glared at the phone after hanging up.How did she get my number?

“Who was that?”

“Media. Paul told me I should just ignore them.”

“You should change your number,” Xander pointed out.

I took a deep breath. “Anyway, how’s your online shop going?”

He pointed at the sky. “Booming. I think I’m ready to expand to shops.” He ate the rest of what was on his plate and added more from the container. “I see you’ve upgraded your stuff. I went into Professor Elan’s class, and your dress is in one of her examples. I mean, wow. Your work has changed.”

“I’ve been revamping all my designs. Her final is coming up. I have something in mind that I must show you.” We finished eating and headed to the studio. There he saw my illusion dress.

“This is stunning.” He touched the jewels and fabric. “You’re doing lacework now?”

I shrugged. “Not really. I’m experimenting.”

“You’re succeeding. I’m proud of you.” He hugged me. “Keep at it.”

“A friend offered me a Givenchy summer internship.”

Tomas still sent information about it. I hadn’t accepted, but I wanted to know what Xander thought.

“Oh, shit. That’s major. You’ve got to start making plans—”

“But Dad needs a kidney. I can’t go.”

He furrowed his brows. “You can’t refuse, Nadia. Darek and Agata will want you to go. Have you told them? I bet you haven’t.”

I shook my head.

“See?” he scoffed. “This is what I mean. You get opportunities that people have only dreamed about, and instead of giving the your all, you’re ready to throw them away. I can’t go home, Nadia. I work hard because I have to make it, and it irritates me that you’re debating one of the best designing houses in the world.Shit.”

Xander had a point, and hearing him say everything out loud made me sound like a fool for even considering passing up the opportunity.

“But what if Dad dies?” I said, my voice small.

“You can’t prevent life. We are all going to die one day. I’m sorry, but you want to be the adult. You need to start making adult decisions. Tough love, babe.”
