Paul: It’s too soon.
I rubbed to soothe the pain in the center of my chest.
Nadia: Everything is too soon with you. You kept me from your family and real friends. I saw the interview, Paul. You’re still on the market. Available, as I’m not your girlfriend. I think that says it all.
Paul: You mean a lot to me. I don’t want you to leave. Please, come back, and we’ll talk this out.
Seeing him would only make me get caught up in his magic and forget myself. What I needed was to return to the person I was before.
Nadia: I don’t want to see you anymore. Goodbye, Paul.
I rubbed the center of my chest and blinked back the tears filling my eyes. My phone chimed with a text from Isabelle.
Isabelle: Call me.
Then my phone chimed with her call.
“I’m sorry. Right now isn’t a good time for me. Can I call you later?”
“I won’t keep you. I’ll get to the point. Did you know Paul’s interviewing surrogates?”
My blood ran cold. “No. I didn’t think he was still searching for one.”
“Okay, I shouldn’t have told you, but you’re my friend. You deserve to know.”
“Thank you, Isabelle. I’ll talk to you soon,” I choked out and hung up.
Was Paul searching for a child? He works on the board, but the way Isabelle said it, there must be more to it.He’ll have a child and search for the perfect mom next. All the while, I’ll be giving him everything I have. Honestly, I’ll never reach beyond our arrangement.
Financial worries rose that hadn’t in a while, but I tamped them down as the driver drove along with the traffic. “Where are you headed?”
I didn’t answer Paul, but checked a flight app. There was a flight leaving from Newark, New Jersey, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in two hours.
“Newark airport, please.”
There’s no place like home.
