“No. I think I need to sleep it off.” He finally said before walking away. I tried not to, but I could not help staring at him as he walked away.

When I turned back, Alba was watching me with uncanny eyes.

I looked away from her immediately, feeling guilty as fuck. Like I’d been caught doing something I wasn’t supposed to do.

“Honey, let me give you one piece of advice,” she said;

“Don’t think about it. You’ll only be playing with fire, and you’d only get burned.”

Chapter 12

Vanessa

Ithadbeentwoand a half months since I'd begun working for Christian Fitzgerald, and I knew as much about him as I did on the first day I arrived.

Very little to nothing.

Of course, I knew the basic things like how he liked his tea and coffee; I knew he loved Alba's lasagna and her homemade tacos. He still ate little, but he had gained some weight back and used his wheelchair only on days when he felt frail.

Alba had informed me all week that his friends would come to the mansion to spend the weekend with him, and honestly, I did not know what to expect.

Christian himself did not seem on edge. He was his usual, calm self, and after our kiss earlier in the week, he'd gone back to ignoring me. Although I could swear I could feel him watching me whenever we were in the same room, he always looked elsewhere when I looked at him.

It almost felt like I'd imagined our kiss.

I'd been the one to tell him it should never have happened, so why did I feel horrible that he was ignoring me?

My thoughts were driving me crazy. Even worse, Christian was, too; his calm and aloof personality made me crazy, and I wanted him to somehow acknowledge that something had happened between us.

It was finally Friday, the day Christian's friends were coming in, and I had assisted Alba in cleaning out the rooms they would be using.

There were four of them, and we'd cleaned out three rooms. Two of them were a couple and would share one room. The rooms were much like mine, although farther than mine, closer to Christian's.

They arrived a little after noon, and I waited in my room, watching from upstairs while Alba, Roger, and Sebastian helped them with their things. From the window, I could hardly make out their features, but I saw that there was one African-American male and the other three were Caucasians. Two males and two females.

I watched as Christian greeted them warmly, and I almost wanted to know how it felt to be treated normally by him.

Soon enough, I heard the loud noises of them entering the house, and I chose that moment to leave my room and descended the stairs. I joined Alba in the kitchen while Christian and his friends were in the living room.

"There you are! I was looking for you." Alba said when I walked in.

"Sorry, I needed to take a quick nap. Headache." I told her, pointing at my head.

"Are you all better now?" She asked, and I nodded.

"What do you need me to do?" I asked her.

"Nothing much now; I already served them some lemonade. I will, however, be needing your help at dinner. If you aren't busy, of course."

"I'll be happy to help Alba," I said to her with a smile.

A blonde-haired, pretty woman walked in at that moment, and I turned to the sound of her coming in.

"Alba, can I have some sparkling water, please?" The woman said; her tone was very much haughty, and she barely glanced in my direction.

"Of course, Miss Elaine," Alba said; I pay no attention to the amused look she passed my way before she walked over to the fridge.

When I turned back our eyes met and she gave me a questionable stare.
