The interview was a breeze. The assistant was desperate to find his boss a new nurse. I'd laid it on pretty thick that I graduated top of my class for a reason and I knew I still got it.

Only a few hours after, I got a call that I got the job. I had a feeling that Leila had put in a good word for me, though. I had gotten the job way too fast to conclude that my skills had gotten me the job.

Whichever way it was, when I saw the pay, I was glad I let my friend talk me into it. The name of the client was a whole new ball game. I was going to be working for Christian Fitzgerald, of the Fitzgerald Group.

My ears rang when I saw this. I remembered seeing in the news that their only son had been involved in an accident and his fiancée had broken up with him after.

What a bitch?

I thought to myself. Feeling almost a kinship with the man. I'd also lost my boyfriend after something major happened to me.

It occurred to me that Leila talked about the man being a jerk. I could only hope that she was exaggerating.

Chapter 5

Vanessa

WhenIgotoffthe plane, a car was waiting for me at the airport with my name on white cardboard paper. It felt surreal, and I could not help the slight thrill at all about the princess treatment.

When I got the email about my travel itinerary, I gaped in shock when I saw that they’d booked me on a first-class ticket. It was the first time I’d ever flown first class, and the experience was everything I’d heard about.

The drive took longer than expected and I dozed off before we got to our destination. When I opened my eyes, we were driving into a sprawling mansion and I could feel my jaw drop as I gaped around me in amazement.

To say that the home was beautiful would do the greatest disservice. I’d been asleep when we drove in through the gate, but I could see the enormous expanse of land, even from the car. The nearest home had to be miles away, as the mansion seemed to be stuck in the middle of nowhere. Spring was already here, but there were still remnants of snow scattered around the trees and the top of the house, and it gave it a dazzling glow.

The house itself was an expansive building that I almost could not believe would be my home for the foreseeable future.

Unless, of course, I got fired.

The walls seemed to be made of stone, but the windows and doors were pure glass. The car drove even further into the house and a large garage door opened for us and we drove inside. There were three other cars in the garage but they were all covered so I could not tell their make.

“This way, Miss.” The driver, who’d been silent throughout the journey, ignoring my attempt at a conversation, said, and I followed him, unable to help my desire to look around me.

He pressed a few buttons on the wall beside the door and it opened up to an open space that I think is the front yard. I am left in a new batch of gaping wonder when I saw the wide pool in the front. On the side of the pool lined up were small water fountains releasing water into the pool. There were also beach chairs and umbrellas on each side, but we were too far away for me to count how many there were.

A chubby, motherly woman opens the front door, and she had a big smile on her face. I felt welcomed instantly.

She said a few words to the driver before turning to me.

“Hello, you must be Vanessa.” She was Hispanic and I detected a slight Spanish accent. Her hair was dark colored, although there are specks of gray in it. Her eyes crinkle to the side when she smiled, and it reminded me of my mom’s smile. I felt a pang of sadness at the thought, but I brushed it down immediately.

“Hi, please call me Van,” I said to her with a smile of my own.

“Hey, Van. I’m Alba. It’s nice to meet you. I’m the housekeeper. Come on in. You’re welcome.”

“Thank you. It’s nice to meet you too, Alba.” I told her, although I was already speaking to her retreating figure.

The driver seemed to have disappeared somewhere and I followed Alba, dragging my suitcase behind me.

“Mr. Fitzgerald is a little busy at the moment, so I’ll just take the time now to show you to your room, and then give you a brief tour of the house.”

“Oh, thanks. It’s a really beautiful home.” I said to her, and she glanced back at me with a smile and a small nod.

The interior of the house was even more beautiful than the posterior if that was even possible. We walked into the hallway first and a giant chandelier with bright lights greeted me. My first thought was that this has got to cost a chunk of money to maintain.

The hallway led to the living room, which I only got a small glimpse of as we walked past. There was an enormous staircase, and I followed Alba as she climbed up.

We walked past a few rooms down the hallway until we arrived in front of a large mahogany door.
