“That’s just—” Katie bit her lip, grabbed the throw pillow next to her, and screamed into it.

Celia giggled. “I can confirm that Trenton is very giving. And Erin’s suggestion about letting Malcolm know…” She shrugged, looking down. “That worked for me with Trenton.”

“I bet he couldn’t wait to make up for all those crappy guys before.” Erin’s eyes went soft again. “I know Nicholas couldn’t. If he even remembers, he—”

“Enough!” Katie shouted.

“Sorry,” Celia said, her cheeks turning pink.

“I don’t mind about Trent, but I have to work with Nicholas, and Malcolm is my brother.” Her eyes cut over to Jami. She sighed. “So if you end up doing it, keep the details to a minimum, okay?”

Jami had always thought she’d be having these types of conversations with Skylar. The idea made her chest squeeze.

“The ‘no details’ thing? That’s all Kay.” Erin winked at her. “I want to hear everything.”

Katie threw the pillow at her, smacking her right in the face. It surprised a laugh out of Celia, and even Jami was able to smile. As the girls’ night continued, the band around Jami’s chest loosened, but she still was determined to call Skylar soon.

Chapter 14

JamiglancedoveratMalcolm as he drove them home from the hospital. Her right leg shifted along the floorboard. She felt lighter now that the cast was off.

Nerves had made her stomach swirl when she’d returned to the hospital, but the bill had already been settled. Dr. Menose was kind enough to see her again as well, during her unusual ER hours, and told her the funding she’d mentioned had taken care of all the expenses, including the follow-up.

The removal of the cast reminded Jami of how long it had been since she’d seen Andrew. He’d called again that morning. She always put her phone on silent, but she’d been hoping Skylar would call back. Malcolm’s all-knowing gaze had studied her in the kitchen when she’d let it ring, but he hadn’t said anything. He was good at not pushing.

Jami knew he had no expectations for them that night. Besides that one brief kiss, he hadn’t even come close to touching her that way. Even so, her heart thudded in her chest as he pulled into the driveway to park.

Malcolm came around to the passenger side, catching the door when she opened it and slid out on her own. He smiled at her. “I guess my excuse to carry you around is gone.”

He wouldn’t be the only one that missed it. Her fingers tingled, and she walked forward until barely any space separated them. She swallowed as she tilted her head back and curled her arms around his neck. It took a second gulp to clear the constriction in her throat enough for words. “Carry me anyway?”

Malcolm’s brown eyes were intent on hers. His arms wrapped around her back, not lifting her but pulling her against his body, closing the last space between them. His mouth lowered to hers.

His lips were gentle at first, brushing her lips as his clove scent settled over her. Jami’s fingers stroked the back of his neck as she parted her lips. Her tongue slid along his bottom lip.

Malcolm’s breath caught, and he deepened the kiss.

His tongue didn’t stab into her mouth, but stroked her own. Jami had forgotten what it was like to lose herself in a kiss. His taste, his hands hot on her back, everything was so intense. Her nipples hardened when he sucked on her tongue, and she clung to his neck so she could press against him tighter to ease the sudden ache—tight enough to feel his erection against her stomach.

Malcolm didn’t break the kiss as he lifted her in his arms and closed the truck door with his hip. She let him worry about carrying her up the walk as she took the initiative and sucked on his tongue instead. The noise he let loose was almost a growl even as he juggled her to unlock the front door.

Jami loved his arms. The teenage Malcolm had been sexy, but he hadn’t been built quite the same way. She leaned back to watch him, and her hands slid from his neck, down along his shoulders, and squeezed his biceps where they stretched the sleeves of his shirt.

Malcolm’s smile had a sensuality she’d begun to think she had once imagined. “I like it when you touch me, Jami.”

Her hands moved to his sides, twisting the hem of his T-shirt up so she could graze the hot skin below. “Take me to bed so I can touch you more.”

He shut and locked the front door behind them, then strode straight to his bedroom. She’d gotten his shirt high enough that she could slide her hands across his chest and over his hardened nipples. His breath shuddered and his lips found hers again, harder than they’d been before, but still so giving.

Jami wrapped her legs around his waist, but kept her hands against him. She pinched his nipples and heard that almost growl again.

He lowered with her to the bed, and all the delicious heat she’d been feeling fled. A band wrapped around her chest as his body pressed into hers. Her hands dropped to the bed like lead, where they twisted in the comforter. Her eyes squeezed shut as her body stiffened.

Malcolm pulled away, sitting up. “Jami?”

She tried to force her hands to let go, but they wouldn’t. “I’m sorry.”

He rose from the bed, turning on the bedside lamp before sitting next to her again, not touching her.
