Page 50 of Finding Hope

“I’m sorry it’s taken me so long,” Jami said. She stared down at her hands in her lap.

“So Drew tried to get his claws in you today?” Skylar asked, lifting her eyebrow.

Jami’s fingers clung together. She doubted her sister would understand all she’d allowed Andrew to do over the years. Jami didn’t understand it herself, and she’d lived it.

Skylar leaned forward. “Talk to me, Jame. You’re not looking so hot, despite the leg being healed up.”

“I’m the older sister,” Jami murmured. She’d always taken care of Skylar, not the other way around.

“Screw that!” Skylar pushed off the couch to stomp toward the open glass doors to the balcony. She gripped the railing before turning, her arms folding over her chest. “Maybe once you were, but not now. I’ve had experiences you’ve never even dreamed of.”

Jami remembered how Skylar had kissed one of her female fans on the way out. Afterward the woman had blushed and whispered something, looking down at the autograph she’d received. Jami had always thought those rumors were media fodder, though she didn’t see anything wrong with it. It was more that her sister had been boy crazy back when she was a teenager. “I know you have,” was all she said, though she blushed a little when she remembered how carnal that kiss had looked. Her kisses with Malcolm seemed vanilla in comparison.

Thinking of him made her clench her hands together so tightly that they ached.

Skylar laughed a little. “You should have seen your expression when I fulfilled that fan’s request.”

“I was just surprised. I mean, you’ve never mentioned any women over the years when you talked about your partners.”

“None worth mentioning. I’ve experimented over the years, and women can be hot occasionally, but I prefer cock.” Skylar shrugged. “Still, a fan’s a fan. And that woman was sweet.” Her lips spread in a smile as her eyes softened.

Jami had thought Malcolm was sweet. She flinched as she remembered the way he’d looked as he attacked Andrew.

Skylar moved back into the room. “What the hell is going on with you, Jame? Did Drew actually do something?”

Jami sucked in a breath. “I’ve been letting him have sex with me for years.”

“Shit.” Skylar collapsed onto the couch next to Jami. “I kind of thought so.”

Jami’s gaze swung to her sister.

“I mean, fuck, Jame. You never mentioned another guy over the years.”

“It’s not like I had a lot of opportunity, what with Dad.” Jami’s gaze dropped again. “I think I was just lonely.” That was the sad truth. Despite how bad it had felt, Andrew had acted like he loved her, and it had eased a desperate need she’d had inside.

Skylar shoved up from the couch again. “Don’t put that shit on me.”

“What?” Jami asked, startled into looking at her again.

“Just because you wanted your life to be over doesn’t mean I had to live like that. It was like you’d lost all hope. I couldn’t stay, Jame.”

Jami shook her head. “I never expected you to.” Her heart clenched as she stared at the pain in her sister’s face. “I was happy for you. I mean that.”

Skylar shook her head. “I’m a selfish bitch.”

“You are not!” Jami stood, crossing to her sister to wrap her in her arms. “The main thing I’m thankful for is that the spark inside you didn’t go out back then.”

“Spark? Hell.” Skylar sighed as she squeezed back. “You mean inferno of crap.”

“You are not crap, Skylar.” Jami released her to indicate the room around them. “You’ve done all this, all by yourself. I’m so proud of you.”

Skylar’s eyes filled with tears. “Aw, shit.” She sniffled, leaning her head on Jami’s shoulder.

Jami held her again. “I’ve been telling you that for years.” The night of the accident came back to claw at her stomach, the decision she’d made. Jami shoved it down.

“I know,” Skylar said on a sobbing breath. “But you have to say that.”

“No, Igetto say that.” Jami squeezed her sister. “I’ve always wanted you to soar. Ever since Mom gave you her guitar when we were little girls.” She listened to Skylar cry. Her sister had never done anything in half measures, and she wasn’t quiet about it. Jami wrapped her arms more tightly around her. “You’re so silly, bottling this up for so long.”
