“Shouldn’t there be something I have to sign?” I wondered. “I mean, I know it’s a legal document, so should there be a lawyer involved? Something?”

“Where did you learn that? Television?” he countered.

“I’m just saying…”

“There’s nothing for you to worry about. My associates and I took care of everything.”

“So my name is on the house?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“You’re sure?”

He looked me right in the eye, brow raised, arms crossed over his chest.

“Yes,” he answered. “Your name. Is on. Everything.”

“Desmond…”

“Don’t you trust me?”

I blinked at him. I took a deep breath. Because I did trust him. He was my husband and I loved him. A lot. He was smart and personable and could converse with anyone about anything. He was profound and sensitive. He was insightful and balanced. He was everything I wasn’t. I was in awe of him.

“Of course I do, Desmond,” I answered, finally.

“Good.”

I could’ve kicked myself for being so fucking stupid.

I called before I got to his block. We made a rule not to just surprise one another with a visit without calling first. He picked up on the first ring.

“What is this about, Zoe? I have company coming over,” he said, testily. I could hear the sounds of water boiling and an oven timer going off. He was cooking, most likely.

“You have our son this week, Desmond. Or is your precious company more important?”

“Point made,” he conceded. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I need to come by. We have to talk about something Rex’s teacher said.”

“We can talk on the phone.”

“This will be easier in person,” I insisted.

“My dinner guest will be over shortly. Can this wait?”

I scoffed. I was half a block from his house. “It’s about ourson, Desmond. And I’m two seconds away from you. Let’s just talk quickly, and I’ll be out of your hair before you can quote something pretentious.”

Then, I hung up before he could get to said quote.

“She’s driving me out of my goddamn mind,” Elias grimaced.

“Who?”

He raised his eyebrows at me. Both of them. Then he took off his glasses and glared at me like he was offended. I shrugged. But I guess I could have been doing a better job of listening to whatever he was complaining about.
