“So what happens now?” I wondered.

“I don’t know. I feel like most normal people might go out on a date or something.”

“Yeah, but what arewegoing to do?”

She laughed. “Well, right now, I’m going to collect my son and take him home,” she said. “Then, I’m probably going to start dinner and make sure he’s done his homework.”

“Okay, mom stuff. That’s fun.”

“And while I definitely think we should start slow, I want you to come over Saturday. After I drop Rex off at Desmond’s house. I think we need to talk about a few things.”

“I agree.”

I knew I should say goodbye to Rex, head back to my car, and head home to where Maya and Steph were probably waiting and looking for answers. But I couldn’t make myself leave. I wanted another minute there with Zoe. I wanted to kiss her.

She wanted to be mine and she was right there.

“I know. I don’t really want to wait either, but…”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “It’s going to be rough.”

She leaned in and kissed my cheek quickly before pulling away.

“Saturday.”

I nodded. I waved goodbye to Rex, who gave me another goofy smile before Zoe shepherded him off to the car. I drove back home wondering how I could get Saturday here faster.

Back inside my condo, I saw Steph and Maya watching TV on my sofa. I’d kind of hoped they’d left by now, but no such luck.

“I see you two have made yourselves at home,” I noted. They had helped themselves to some snacks and drinks and set up their daughter in a pack-and-play on the floor.

“What can I say? This is a really good sofa,” Maya justified.

Steph turned to me, patting the spot next to her and I sat down. I tried to join them in enjoying their movie, but it was pointless.

“You look happy, Carter. What’s going on?” Steph asked.

“I think… I have a girlfriend,” I mused.

Steph and Maya both smiled and hugged me, but our little celebration ended as Gaby started to fuss. Steph got up to tend to her, but I stopped her. I knelt down and picked up Gaby, holding her the way I saw Steph and Maya do earlier.

“Let me try.”

Twenty-Eight

Zoe

Saturday evening, at around six, I drove Rex to his father’s house. I was on pins and needles the entire time, equal parts excited and nervous. Because when I got back, Carter would be waiting for me. To talk.

“Mom, are you okay?” Rex asked me.

“Yes, honey.”

“Are you sure?”

I nodded. “I was just thinking. I need to tell your father to make sure you do your book report by Monday.”

“It’s already done.”
