“Come for me,” I hissed in her ear. “Come all over me. Let me feel it.”

At my command, she let go, cursing and moaning my name, letting her orgasm consume her. I wanted to watch. I wanted that memory of seeing her come apart at my touch, but I was losing control. I came seconds later so hard my vision went dark for a moment.

It took a moment before I caught my breath, but when I finally did, I rolled to my back and pulled Zoe close, so she could rest her head on my chest. I smoothed her sweaty hair behind her ear and felt her exhale against my skin.

My eyes drifted to the wall. The one separating her condo from mine.

“Carter, what are you thinking about?” she whispered.

“Nothing, just… that wall comes down, you know.”

“What?” she wondered.

“That wall,” I tried to explain, though my brain wasn’t fully functioning yet. “That wall between our condos could come down. Not tonight. Just… someday. This place would be twice as big.”

“Are you suggesting that we move in together?”

“Not right this minute,” I said, backtracking. “And maybe not any time soon. But someday. I’m thinking about it. I just… I wanted you to know that I was serious, Zoe.”

“Hmm…”

“I mean, I know it might be too soon to start thinking like that. We’d have to have a big talk with Rex. We… we haven’t even saidI love youyet. I didn’t mean to get ahead of myself or anything…”

She stared at the wall too. I was dying to know what she was thinking.

“Zoe? What…”

“I’ve always hated that wall,” she said, looking up at me.

“Then… down it goes.”

One Year Later

Zoe

“I really don’t needbirthday drinks,” I told Sasha. “I really just want a quiet night at home. Plus, I’m supposed to pick up Rex in a few hours.”

“I know. And I’m not going to let you get hammered. You’ll be plenty sober by the time you have to pick up Rex.” Sasha assured me.

We pulled into the parking lot at Rook’s. It was the middle of the afternoon, but there were already a lot of cars in the parking lot.

“Sasha, I—”

“One. Drink.” She got out of the car, clearly not willing to take no for an answer. She grabbed my hand and dragged me towards the door. In the daylight, I felt a little silly wearing one of my favorite short dresses. It was definitely a nighttime outfit, but Sasha had insisted that we dress to kill. Her words.

“One drink,” I repeated.

Sasha pulled open the front door and we set foot inside.

“Surprise!”

I looked around, jaw on the floor, as all of the important people in my life were gathered around. A big banner readingHappy Birthday, Zoehung over the bar. Carter and Rex ran to greet me; Carter kissing me quickly on the lips while my son wrapped his arms around my waist.

“Happy birthday, Zoe,” Carter said, warmly. He squeezed Rex’s shoulder.

“Happy birthday, Mom,” Rex echoed. “Were you surprised?”
