Cindy: Luke, maybe too much time has passed.

Luke: Are you saying that you don’t want to see me?

Cindy: I do want to see you. I’m just not sure it’s a good idea.

Luke: Maybe not. You’ve been in town for weeks and haven’t called or stopped by.

Luke: I can take a hint, Cindy.

Luke: If you don’t want to see me, just say so.

Cindy: That’s not what I said. I want to see you. I’m just not sure it’s a good idea.

Luke: Why?

The little fucking dots appeared, disappeared, and reappeared several times. I was ready to chuck my phone against the wall.

Luke: Cindy, this is ridiculous. Where are you? Your sister’s place?

Cindy: Yeah. Why?

Luke: I’m picking you up. We need to do this in person.

Luke: If I see those fucking dots one more time, I’m going to lose my shit.

Cindy: Dots?

Luke: Just be ready in ten minutes.

Cindy: It’s three in the afternoon. Aren’t you at work?

Luke: I’m the boss. I can leave if I want to.

Cindy: Okay.

Luke: Text me your address.

Cindy: I don’t have one. I’m staying with Stephanie.

Luke: Then text me her address.

Cindy obliged and gave me the address. As I grabbed my jacket, I stopped by the desk in the back where Elias was going through this week’s invoices. To my surprise, Carter was with him.

“What’re you doing here?” I asked. “I thought you’d be at the inn all day.”

Carter had worked for Kane Construction since he dropped out of college. My dad kind of forced him into it because he felt Carter needed some structure. I think he had meant it to be a punishment, but Carter took to this work like a fish to water and was one of the best guys we had. Lately, he’d been after me to promote him to a managerial position and I’d been considering it. But him coming back from a job site early to fuck around with Elias wasn’t the way to drive the needle in his favor.

“Carter, you wanted to prove that you could handle being a supervisor,” I started. “I can’t let you run the show if you can’t—”

“We’re already done, Luke,” Carter said, crossing his arms over his chest defensively. “We finished an hour ago. Which is a full fucking day ahead of schedule if you’re keeping track.”

“Hm…”

“Hm?Really? NotI’m sorry for underestimating you, Carter?”

I just grunted.

“Speaking of cutting out early, where the hell are you going?” Elias asked.
