“Your sister’s marrying a woman, isn’t she?” My mother sat back in her recliner, musing. “Was she always a lesbian? She seemed so—”
“I can’t do this anymore,” I blurted. “Cindy, let’s get out of here.”
“We were watching Elizabeth Vargas. Don’t be rude,” Ma scolded.
I got up anyway and took Cindy’s hand, gently pulling her to her feet. She obliged but raised an eyebrow.
“Where are you going?” Mom asked.
“Just… out. We’ll be back soon,” I answered.
Once outside, I opened the door to my truck for Cindy and she climbed in.
“Are you going to at least tell me where we’re going?” Cindy asked. “I mean, I was kind of into the show.”
“We’re going to the creek.”
“Really? Why?”
“We have to pick up where we left off,” I answered.
I drove as quicklyas I could and parked in the dirt. I scrambled out of the driver’s side and into the back. Cindy followed. I reached for her hand and helped her up into the back with me. It was dark over the water, and there were stars glimmering in the sky. Cindy sat down across from me, confused.
“What are we doing here, Luke?” she wondered.
“That night we got interrupted.”
“Yeah?”
“And everything between us has been fucked ever since,” I tried to explain.
She shrugged. She was still confused.
“So we need a do-over,” I told her. “Tell me that you need to talk to me.”
“What about?”
I shook my head. I was doing a piss-poor job of explaining.
“No, like, the way you did that night. Tell me that you want to talk to me, then tell me what you were going to say.”
“We’re re-enacting that night?”
“Yes,” I confirmed.
“And you want me to tell you that I was in love with you?”
“Yes. Whatever you were going to say back then, do it now.”
“Fuck, Luke, this is embarrassing,” she said.
“No, it’s not. Everything’s been fucked since that night. But look around. No distractions. No Emmeline. Now’s our chance.”
“You don’t get it, do you? We didn’t get a chance. And there was a reason,” she pointed out.
“What was it?”
“You’re not in love with me.”
