“Oh. Good.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Really?Good?I thought you were rooting for us to get together.”

“I was. Back then,” she told me. “But remember how you felt about Luke back then. You wanted him so badly that you kind of—”

“Kind of what?”

“Lost yourself,” she said carefully. “You know, everything you did was all about Luke.”

I looked at her, offended.

“I mean, in high school, that was fine,” she added quickly. “Everyone has that crush that breaks their heart and knocks them on their ass. You’re not in high school anymore, but you’re starting to act like it again.”

“Fuck you, Steph,” I blurted.

“You’re moody and you’re hiding from the world and you’re—”

“I don’t have time for this.”

“I’m sorry, Cindy. I know I overstepped. I’m just… You kissed him. You’re living with him. Are you sure you’re not…”

“I’m not still in love with Luke.”

“Are you sure? I mean… you don’t have to stay in his house.”

“I know.”

“You could stay here. Or at Maya’s old place.”

“I know that. It’s just easier.”

“Easier to keep an eye on him, you mean,” she said, narrowing her eyes at me. “Make sure he’s not seeing anyone. Make sure you’ve got nothing to be jealous of.”

“How fucking pathetic do you think I am?” I snapped.

“You’re not pathetic. You’re human.”

“Hanging on to a high school crush for ten years would be pretty pathetic. Luckily, that’s not what I’m doing.”

“Cindy.”

“If we’re done moving Maya’s shit and you’re done butting into my life, I’m going to get out of here,” I told her.

As if I hadn’t been feeling exposed enough, Maya chose that moment to walk in.

“Cindy, before you go, I wanted to tell you that I had some ideas,” she said cheerfully.

“Huh?”

“Steph was telling me about your problems and…”

“Fucking hell.” I groaned. “Half the reason I left this town was that I hate being gossip fodder for everyone at the fucking bar. How many times do I have to tell you? I’m not still in love with Luke Kane.”

“Whoa, Nelly,” Maya said, putting up both hands in thatback offgesture. “I was talking about you finding a job.”

“Oh.”

“Maya is going to be a high school guidance counselor,” Stephanie informed me.
