“Yeah. And if you were one of my students, I’d tell you to take inventory of the things you actually like and the way you actually like to work.”

“Okay.”

“You were in the military. I’m assuming you like structure and order. And I know you like being in charge,” she continued.

“All of that is true.”

“And I know that you’re active. You run all the time and you’re not afraid of physical challenges.”

“Okay. Where are you going with this?”

“There’s a group of people training to take the fire department physical exam soon. They meet at the firehouse on Saturday mornings to do all the drills and stuff,” Maya said. “I’m just saying this might be a good fit for you.”

“I don’t know.”

“Cindy has some shrapnel in her hip,” Steph added.

“Oh.”

“But I’ll think about it. It might not affect me too much,” I conceded.

With an affirmative nod from Maya and offering anI’m not sure I forgive you, but you’re my sisterhug to Stephanie, I headed out.

Back to the Kanes’ house. Where I was staying.

In the room right next to Luke.

It wasearly afternoon by the time I got back to Luke’s house. By now, I’d developed a bit of a routine. I’d try to take a long time getting ready in the morning and head downstairs right as Luke was leaving for work, then get back to the house as late as possible so we might only have to interact for an hour or so before I would head to bed.

I had about a half an hour before Luke would be back from work, so if I could head up to my room before Mrs. Kane caught me, I could hide out in there for a while. Ugh, Steph was right. I was hiding from the world. Or at least tiptoeing around Luke.

Unfortunately, when I got back to the house, Luke was already there, sitting at the kitchen table, eating a sad-looking sandwich.

“You’re home early.”

“I am,” he said flatly.

“Want to tell me why?”

Despite my better judgment, I pulled out a chair and sat with him.

“Carter kicked me out of my job,” he said.

“Is he allowed to do that?”

“No. But I kind of let him.”

“I’m confused.”

“So am I. Carter called me out on hating my job, and he’s right. He wants to take over the company.”

“Really? Do you think he actually could?” I wondered.

He shrugged.

“’Cause if he can, that’s kind of perfect. The company stays in the family and you get to go chase your dreams or something,” I pointed out.

“I think it’s been established that I have no dreams.”
