“I feel like Ishouldbe feeling like I’m getting ready for the best date of my life,” I told her. “But I don’t.”

I didn’t want to admit it, but I had a bad feeling about tonight.

“Do you want to go?” she wondered. “It’s not too late to cancel.”

“No, I want to go.”

Well, I wanted towantto go.

“Also, I didn’t think you were super in favor of Luke and me going out on a date. You and Maya were pretty anti-Luke a few months ago,” I reminded her.

“We weren’t anti-Luke. We’re just pro-Cindy,” she reasoned. “But Luke’s kind of proven himself to be a really good friend lately. And he hasn’t pushed things too far with you, as far as I can tell.”

“He hasn’t. He’s been the perfect friend.”

“Well, let’s hope he’ll be the perfect date,” Steph said. “I feel like he’s finally ready for you.”

“I hope so.”

A few hours later,I arrived at the Village Square in a beautiful black dress that Stephanie approved of. The hostess took me to the table, and I saw a man sitting there, wearing a slate gray suit with a crisp white dress shirt, typing out a text on his phone. It took me a minute to recognize it was Luke, and I swallowed hard.

He was deeply engrossed in his texting as I approached him and cleared my throat.

“Luke?”

He looked up from his phone suddenly, a guilty expression on his face. Despite that, I saw that he’d trimmed his beard and styled his hair a little. Luke was a good-looking man in his regular jeans, T-shirt, and flannel shirt. But well groomed and in a suit, he was something out of a men’s magazine. Though maybe under the headline “Caught Red-Handed.”

“Who were you texting?”

“It’s not important,” he answered.

“Looked pretty important.”

“It’s, um…” He looked up at me and said nothing. His lips parted and his eyes opened wider. “It’s not as important as this.”

I narrowed my eyes at him but decided to let it go.

“You, um, you look really good,” I mustered.

“You too. Really good,” he replied. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look like that. So…”

“Girly?”

“Beautiful.”

His eyes met mine and I smiled. I went to pull out my chair, but Luke scrambled to his feet and pulled it out for me, making sure I was seated before returning to his side of the table.

“Thanks.”

Luke smirked, showing the dimple in his cheek, and I felt my face flush. This was it. My date with Luke Kane. Dressed up. In a nice restaurant with candles and multiple forks. An actual date.

My phone dinged with a text message.

“Don’t. Just ignore it,” Luke told me.

“It might be an emergency.”

Luke protested, but I reached for my phone anyway and checked it.
