Carter: I don’t think so.

Carter: Sarah made this fucker do body shots off of her earlier.

Carter: Mr. Responsible it pretty toasted.

Luke: So how are you all getting home?

Elias: Cab. Uber. Something like that.

Carter: Unless our favorite brother wants to come by and pick us up.

Elias: You just told him to fuck off a few seconds ago.

Luke: Whatever. I’m on my way.

Playing drunk taxi wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for the night, but it was as good an excuse as any to see Cindy. I drove to Rook’s and pulled up in front of the bar where my brothers and Kieran were already waiting for me.

“Cindy, he’s here,” Kieran called. “Get in the car.”

Finally, Cindy appeared, phone in hand.

“It’s cool,” she said, more to me than to Kieran. “I’m calling an Uber.”

“It’s, like, a forty-minute wait for an Uber. Just get in the car,” Carter insisted. “It’s a tight fit. You can sit on my lap.”

“Fat fucking chance,” I muttered.

Carter, Elias, and Kieran piled into the back row of seats, and I leaned over to open the passenger-side door for Cindy.

“Very gentlemanly,” she said.

“I try.”

Carter was wedged between the other two guys and leaned over, right between me and Cindy.

“Let’s hit a drive-through,” he requested.

“Fuck yeah. Let’s go to Taco Bell,” Kieran goaded.

Elias sneered and looked a little green. Despite how articulate his texts were, a hard night of partying was catching up with him.

“This isn’t a party bus,” I told them. “I’m dropping you off first, Carter, then Kieran, then Elias. Then you, Cindy. You’re the farthest.”

“Fine,” Cindy said.

She was quiet and looked dead ahead as I dropped off my brothers and their best friend, one by one. Finally, it was just her and me.

“Holbrook is the fastest way to my place,” she told me.

I knew that. I made the turn.

“You, um… You look real nice tonight,” I said awkwardly.

“Thank you.”

More silence.

“Did you have fun tonight?” I asked. “I know it was the bachelorette night.”
