“It’s fine. You can’t change people,” she said. “I guess I just expected too much.”

She shoved her hands in the pockets of her jackets.

“We can find someone else to walk you down the aisle,” I assured her. “Maybe Carter or Kieran.”

“Maybe,” she agreed. “Or maybe I’ll just give myself away.”

“Steph.”

“It’s fine. I’m not going to get bent out of shape over this. I’m marrying Maya on Saturday and that’s everything I could ever want. I’m going to live a long, happy life and if Dad doesn’t want to be a part of it, then fuck him.”

“Couldn’t have said it better myself.”

On the dayof the wedding, it was just Steph and me in the bridal suite of Farrelly Grove. I helped her into her gown and zipped up the back. I stood next to her as she admired herself in the full-length mirror, looking every bit the perfect bride. I did my best not to tear up and ruin my makeup.

“You look beautiful, Steph,” I whispered. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you.”

“And if I haven’t already told you this a million times, I’m so proud of you,” I told her.

“That means a lot to me, Cindy. I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Where else would I be?”

“You know what I mean.”

I did. I’d been back in my sister’s life for a while now, but I hadn’t really feltbackuntil recently. I realized how much I’d been missing out on all these years.

“None of this would have happened without you,” she told me.

“Of course it would have.”

“No, it wouldn’t. Not without your help and your encouragement.”

I smiled and helped her with her veil.

“I’m sorry the job here didn’t work out,” she said.

“Me too.”

“You would have been perfect running the show for the brides. The Farrellys are idiots for not seeing that.”

“Thanks, Steph. I think so too. I mean, not that they’re idiots. But that I would have been good at this,” I said. “But this day isn’t about me and the job that didn’t pan out. This is about you and Maya and you’re future.”

Stephanie smirked as she smoothed her dress, likely picturing her future with her soon-to-be-wife. They were planning a honeymoon in Mexico and wanted to immediately start looking into adopting a child after they got back.

I sighed. My future was less certain. While things with Luke were starting off strong, I still felt a little lost without structure to my day and a task to accomplish. But with my sister, my boyfriend, and a lot of new, wonderful friends around, I was sure I was on the right track.

There was a knock on the bridal suite door. It was Jessa, the young woman who first showed us the venue. Only, instead of her Farrelly Grove polo and khakis, she wore a suit.

“Are we ready to go in here?” she asked.

“Is it time?” Steph wondered. “Already?”

Jessa nodded. “Everything’s in place. We just need the bride. Well, the other bride,” she added with a laugh. “Is, um, is someone walking you down the aisle, Stephanie?”

Steph sighed. “No.”
