Her leg muscles tensed alerting Clay that she was going to move. He put his hands on her hips preventing her from leaving.

“Stay.” He softened the order with “Please.” When her eyes flared with anger. They were glazed with her tears but none fell.

She settled back into his lap but the tension was still there, and she still wouldn’t look at him. Clay used his index finger to raise her chin.

“Sweetheart, explain to me what’s going on here cause a minute ago you were burning up and now you’re so cold I’m worried I’m about to get frostbite.”

“I got our signals crossed no worries if you’ll just let me up. I’ll let you get out of here. I’m sure you’re busy.”

She was trying to hold it together. He could see it in her face, he could feel it in the fine tremors going through her thighs, but more importantly, he could feel the emotions coming off her in waves through the newly formed bond between them.

“You think signals got crossed? That I don’t want you? That I don’t want to throw you down on the nearest flat surface and bury my cock in you over and over until this hunger eating away at both of us is satisfied?”

He felt the shiver that went through her at his graphic description. Her pulse pounded in her throat making him want to bite her again so that he could feel the beat on his tongue.

“Jade, I want you so bad I can’t think straight,” he confessed. “There are things you need to know before we take this any further though. I’m not stopping because I’m not attracted to you. I’m stopping to protect you. So that you can make an informed decision about being with me.”

“What kind of things?” her body was less ridged but her tone was still cautious as if she would flee the moment he gave a wrong answer.

“You’re my mate.” Clay put it out there a second time without embellishment. “You need to understand what that means before we take things to a level that would be difficult to come back from.”

Clay shifted her in his lap so that she no longer straddled his thighs, but he refused to let her go very far already hating any distance between them.

“You may know about lycans - and I want to know how you came to find out about us eventually - but I doubt you know about our customs or mating.” He watched her shake her head before he went on to explain.

“Lycans can date like regular humans we can even marry just like everyone else, but there’s a phenomenon that can happen where we are fated to mate with a particular person. That person is our blood mate and we often know them instantly upon meeting them. Like I did with you.”

Clay nestled her more firmly into his side linking their fingers together. He could sense her confusion before she spoke.

“I still don’t understand how you can be so certain.”

“The knowledge of you exploded into my consciousness and my wolf instantly knew that you were meant for us.”

I’m not a lycan though I’m -” she stopped so abruptly that Clay stared at her. He could sense that she was holding back, but also that it wasn’t the time to press her for answers. He needed to get their full story out.

“The bond between mates is intense and if we take things too far your body will go into heat until it becomes like a frenzy. We won’t be able to get enough of each other.”

He went on to explain the other details of the bond and how they would be able to speak to each other telepathically, how they would want to touch frequently both physically and mentally and how if they were apart they would go through a powerful and dangerous withdrawal.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

When he was done explaining her head was spinning. Jade would have thought he was exaggerating but she already felt their bond growing stronger. The urge to be as close as possible to him was hard to ignore and she found herself snuggling into his side until she fit comfortably as if the spot was made for her.

The thought of being metaphysically tied to him was frightening though. It seemed cruel that nature would expect her to give up her power, or at the very least join it to whomever she chose as a partner in life and now it seemed like even that choice would be taken from her.

Would Quinn be the better option? He was certainly the devil she knew and she was fairly sure that she could keep him from draining her completely.

“Who is Quinn?” Clay asked his tone tight, on the verge of jealousy.

Jade stared up at him shock ricocheting through her system. She hadn’t spoken Quinn’s name aloud.

“You accessed the mental connection that is forming between us.” He answered her unasked question, but the answer only spurs more questions in her mind. He was right. She may know about shifters but she didn’t know anything about what it meant to be Lycan.

She would ask him, but he was still holding himself stiffly waiting for her to answer.

“Do I have to compete for your affection?”

His slightly sad tone tore at her heart making her feel the need to set him at ease.
