“Could we argue about this when my mate is safe instead of bleeding into the space in question?”

“Ok, I won’t send the energy into the earth. Clay is right though we need to do something quick.”

Christine pulled a large clear crystal from her bag and began walking the circle in the opposite direction that Jade had. Once she was back where she had started she covered the crystal with a black cloth and slid it into a pouch. She bent and gathered a handful of the salt that made up the circle that Jade had cast sprinkling that into the satchel before closing it with a tight knot and putting it back in to her bag. With the circle broken, the air no longer felt charged Clay’s hair stopped standing on end. He watched as she entered and went to help Jade motioning for Clay and the others to join her.

Jade was bleeding from the nose and her heartbeat was erratic. If she were a lycan he would have forced her to shift so that she would heal but she wasn’t a shifter and he was at a loss for how to help her.

Then he remembered how he’d aided her before by sharing energy with her. He wasn’t sure if it would work again since they didn’t have the mate bond linking them but he felt compelled to try.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

“Does your pack have a healer or doctor?” Christine’s words finally penetrated the fog he was in. He kept straining to hear Jade’s heartbeat while his eye never strayed from the rise and fall of her chest as she took the shallow breaths that were keeping her alive.

“Yeah, we do but if it’s serious she’ll need the hospital.”

“I won’t be able to explain her injuries to the hospital. Get your doctor to come.”

Clay knew they had already called, but he was starting to worry that they were running out of time. Her breathing was becoming more labored, and her heartbeat was more erratic. He listened as it gave two quick beats then missed a beat before slowing down more than it should.

“I shared energy with her before when she was drained from doing a spell. It helped her feel better. Would it hurt her if we tried that again.”

Christine looked grim when she answered. “I honestly don’t think it could hurt at this point, but I’d still call your doctor.”

Clay ignored everyone else in the clearing and laid his hands on Jade. Her skin was cool and she didn’t acknowledge his touch. Swallowing back his fear Clay called up the energy that he used to shift as he had before.

It was harder this time since they didn’t have the benefit of the mate bond but he directed that energy into Jade and was surprised when he could almost see the injuries she’d sustained.

She was bleeding internally and when he sent his energy seeking inside of her he realized she also had a skull fracture. His energy faltered at seeing the extent of her injuries. He wasn’t a doctor or a healer and he didn’t know what he was doing.

Clay was just about to pull his energy back when he felt Christine bolstering him. He was flooded with images of how to use his essence to help Jade.

He didn’t question it. Instead, he latched on to the help she was offering and set about using the new knowledge to repair the damage to Jade’s body.

Minutes or hours could have gone by and he wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference. He was meticulous in his efforts and only when he was sure that she was no longer in danger did he stop.

When he became aware of his physical presence around him he was surprised to find his cousins staring at him with matching looks of awe on their faces. The doctor for the Coldridge pack was also there and he wore a similar expression.

Clay didn’t care how they looked at him or what they thought of him as long as Jade was alright.

“Well, I can see I was dragged out of bed for nothing. I’ll come back to check on her in the morning.”

“You both need to rest now but I think she’s out of immediate danger. If it’s alright I’ll stay so we can try the spell again.” Christine looked towards his cousins a look of determination on her face.

“It almost killed her. There is no way we can try again.” Clay interjected but there was no heat to his words. He felt weak, depleted, and ravenous as if his wolf hadn’t eaten in weeks so there was no way he could argue the point with Christine now.

They helped move Jade into the house and settle her into bed while Clay moved on auto-pilot.

“You need to eat and rest we’ll talk about it again tomorrow.” She turned away as if dismissing him but since he was barely able to keep his eyes open Clay didn’t care.

He managed a small smile when Kelly brought him a plate piled high with leftovers from dinner, and tried not to embarrass himself as he shoved food into his mouth as fast as he could nearly choking in his haste to eat.

“My God it feels like my stomach is hollow.”

“I’m not surprised. What you did, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Admiration was clear in his tone as Jace handed him a glass of water. Ryan had left the room with Christine to find somewhere for her to sleep and Kelly had slipped back out to refill the plate of food.

“You used your energy to heal her. Do you know how rare that is?”

Clay chuckled, “I didn’t even know what that was. Never mind how rare it was.” He stripped down to his boxers while they were talking and slid into bed next to Jade carefully pulling her close. “It was an act born of desperation, Jace. I can’t lose her. She thinks because she severed our link I’d survive losing her but I wouldn’t.”
