“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Tam growled.

“Looking out for my brother, since you seem inclined to give him alcohol poisoning.”

“He’s a grown-up, isn’t he? He can decide for himself. Or does he need his big sister taking care of him like he did when he was a kid?” He nudged Jayden with his foot. “Are you jealous, Jayden? Huh? Jealous of a Cornell fucking your sister. You should see some of the stuff she lets me do to her. She’s hot for anything, aren’t you, Hallie. You should have seen her a little while ago with her legs splayed and a bottle shoved up her cunt for everyone to see. Or did you see it, Jay? Was that why you were here? Were you getting off on watching your big sister creaming all over a champagne bottle?”

I stared at him in horror. How could he say these things to me, and to Jayden? Was it the alcohol talking? I didn’t even care. His mouth was cruel, and he was using his words to hurt us both.

“How fucking dare you say that,” I spat. “You sick piece of shit.”

He taunted me. “What’s wrong, little girl? Too close to the truth?”

Tears filled my eyes, but I wasn’t going to let Tam see them. I dropped to a crouch beside Jayden. My brother hadn’t helped this situation, but I still wasn’t going to abandon him here.

“Come on, Jay. Party’s over. Time to go home.”

I picked up his arm and swung it around my neck. Luckily, he wasn’t unconscious, or I’d never have been able to get him to his feet. It was a nightmare, though, and Tam made no effort to help me, despite him being partially responsible for this mess. Anger and hatred flared inside me. I’d had more respect for Tam Cornell than this. Despite everything, I’d thought he might have had a good side to him, but now I felt like he’d shown me his true colours and everything that had come before had just been an act.

“Where do you think you’re going, Hallie?” he demanded.

“I’m taking my brother home.”

“I’ll get my driver to take him.”

Was that his way of an apology? I didn’t care if it was. It was too little too late.

“No need. We have drivers of our own, remember?” I used my ‘Wynter’ voice, remembering who I was. He might be Tam Cornell, but I was Hallie Wynter. I wasn’t some nobody who he could impress with money and power.

Jayden had managed to get to his feet, though I felt as though I was taking most of his body weight. It was lucky I wasn’t exactly petite, or he’d have squashed me. Clubbers had noticed the display and had also clocked onto who was involved, so they parted to make way for us. A part of me wanted Tam to come after us, but I was also worried about what would happen if he did. I was furious with him for pushing Jayden like he had, and for implying Jayden would ever think of me in such a way. He’d humiliated my brother, and for what? To try and get one over on my family? Maybe Jayden shouldn’t have come here, but Tam didn’t need to have reacted like that. Saying what he had about me, and in public, too, had crossed a line.

We pushed past the bouncers and stepped out in the London air. I took my phone out of my tiny clutch bag and brought up the number for my father’s driver. I pressed the phone to my ear, balancing it awkwardly between my shoulder while I continued to prop Jay up.

The driver answered, and I told him where we were. He would come, no questions asked. People on the pavement gave us a wide berth, probably smelling the puke coming off Jay, and not wanting to end up getting sick on their shoes.

“I want a kebab,” Jayden mumbled.

“You’re not having a fucking kebab. I’m taking you home.”

“You’re such a spoilsport, Hallie. I’m just having some fun.”

“Yeah, well your idea of having fun has just fucked things up royally. I suggest you shut the hell up so I don’t decide to leave you here.”

Within ten minutes, the expensive black Range Rover drew up beside us. The driver climbed out and came around to the side we were on and opened the back door for us. He helped me get Jay onto the back seat, and then I slammed the door on him and climbed into the front passenger seat. If Jay was going to throw up again, I’d prefer not to be in the line of fire.

“Where to, Miss Wynter?”

“Take Jay home, please. Then I’m going to need to go back to Tam Cornell’s house.”

“Of course.”

I needed to go to Tam’s and get my stuff. Was a part of me hoping he’d be there? No, I wanted him to stay in the club so I could make a quick escape. I could send someone else there to get my belongings, but I didn’t think Tam would react well to another Wynter being in his house, especially considering what his reaction had been to my brother just being in his club.

Was I lying to myself? Did I really hope he’d come back to the house so I could see him again? My warring emotions tortured me.

The driver pulled up outside the hotel where Jay lived, and a doorman rushed forward to help. We were back on Wynter territory now, so I could feel safe in the knowledge that he’d be helped up to his room.

“Love you, sis,” he said as he slithered out of the vehicle. “You’re better than that arsehole, you know.”

“Yeah, I know. Get some sleep, Jay. I’ll see you in the morning.”
