“You’ve already killed more people than we took from you,” I continued. “I made a mistake, but you’ve punished us enough. We will come for you, Rasmus, if you don’t let her go. This won’t be the end.”

The emergency services were going to be here soon—there was no way this many people could have seen what was going down and for no one to have called them—and it was going to take some serious money to pay off the dirty coppers in London’s Metropolitan Police to make this go away.

“The police will be here any minute. Unless you want to ensure that you never see your home country again, I suggest you let her go and get the fuck out of here while you can.”

Rasmus jerked his chin in a nod at his men, and then he pushed Hallie towards me. She almost stumbled but managed to keep to her feet. I opened my arms to her, and she ran into them, slamming into me. With her face pressed to my chest, I folded her against me.

“It’s okay,” I told her. “Everything’s going to be okay.”

Rasmus finally lowered his gun. “Let’s get out of here,” he said to his men.

They all got on the move and fled, taking the back route out of the club. No one went after them. There had been enough bloodshed for one night.

“Are you okay,” I asked Hallie, holding her slightly away from me so I could see into her face.

She nodded, and I wiped away her tears with my thumb, and then kissed her mouth. God, how much I’d missed that mouth.

I forced myself to break away, knowing I needed to assess the damage.

Layla ran over to check on her friend, and the two women embraced, both crying.

“I’m so sorry I made you come,” Layla sobbed.

“It wasn’t your fault. It’s okay,” Hallie reassured her.

But it wasn’t okay, not for everyone. I remembered my brother, huddled on the floor, and hurried over to him.

“Leo?” He didn’t respond. “Leo, are you all right?”

He finally lifted his head. “It’s not me. It’s Jodie.”

“Oh, Jesus. Fuck.”

He’d been hunched over his fiancée’s body. The red of her dress blended with the red of her skin. Her eyes were closed, her chest unmoving.

I became aware of Hallie beside me.

“No,” she cried. “Not Jodie.”

“They shot her,” Leo howled. “Those fuckers shot her.”

My heart broke for Leo. If it had been Hallie—which it almost was—I’d have lost my mind. Leo had never hidden his feelings for Jodie, and now she was dead.

The club’s doors burst open, and the overhead lights all came on, forcing us all to squint and protect our eyes in the sudden illumination.

“Police! No one move.”

I quickly wiped my prints off the handle of my gun and tossed it to one side. It would be easy enough for the police to match the bullet that was in Sly to my gun, plus the gunpower residue that was on my hands and shirt sleeve. The gun wasn’t legally registered to me, but it was still going to take some serious money to make this go away.

Slowly, I put my hands in the air and waited to be arrested.
