Tam’s jaw hardened. “Someone out there knows who killed Harvey and the reason behind it.”

“I thought your money was always on the Gilligans?”

“I’m not ruling them out.”

I studied the letter again. Plain white paper. Black printed typeface. There was nothing about it that made it stand out or gave us any clue as to who it was from.

“What does this person want by sending this to us?” I said. “Is it a taunt? A way of telling us that they’ve got something on us? Or is it a threat? Or do they want something? Maybe the next letter we receive will be asking us for money in return for the information?”

Tam’s lip curled. “If someone thinks they can fuck with us like that, they’re going to get a nasty shock when we find out who they are.”

“Either way, I think we’ll hear from this person again.”

“Good, because when we do, I’ll cut pieces off him until he tells us who killed Harvey.”

I suppressed a smile. “I see marriage and future fatherhood hasn’t softened you at all, Tam?”

“Only for her, little bro. Only for her.”

I was happy for Tam and Hallie, but I still experienced that twinge of bitterness. Tam had never even wanted to get married, where I’d been confident in my decision to marry Jodie, even though we’d both only been in our twenties. I’d had no doubt in my mind that I’d wanted to grow old with her, to have a family—though I hadn’t planned that for a few years yet. It seemed so fucking unfair that Tam had been the one to get the life I’d dreamed of while I’d suffered nothing but loss.

Tam changed the subject, perhaps sensing my bitterness. “Have you decided what to do about Rasmus’s daughter yet?”

I pressed my lips together. “No. Maybe it had been a mistake taking her. I should have just gone in there and killed Rasmus and be done with it, but I wanted him to suffer. I wanted him to know the kind of pain he put me through. I wanted him to know what it was to lose someone you loved.”

“You’re sleeping with her, aren’t you?”

Damn. Tam had always been able to see right through me.

“It’s just fucking, Tam. I took her so she’s mine. I can do whatever I want to her.”

“And how does she feel about that?”

“Who gives a fuck?”

He arched an eyebrow. “I’ve got a feeling you do, or you’d have killed her by now.”

I shrugged. “I don’t like killing women.”

“Especially pretty ones with perky tits and long dark hair.”

I couldn’t reply to that.

Tam sighed. “Look, Leo, I’m glad you’re back on the horse, but this has to end somewhere. Either you kill her, or Rasmus will come to take her back. If you kill Rasmus, you’ll be left with his daughter, and what do you plan on doing then? You can’t keep her. She’s not like some stray dog you’ve brought home.”

“She doesn’t want to go back to Estonia. She hated her life there.”

“You’ve talked about that?”

“Yes.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “So, you’re fuckingandyou’re talking. That sounds more like a relationship to me than a captor-and-captive situation.”

I scowled. “It’s not a relationship. What am I supposed to do, keep her silent with my cock in her mouth? People talk.”

“You’re kidding yourself, Leo. I’ve seen how you are together. You might not like the idea of falling for someone after what happened with Jodie, but you can’t deny yourself forever.”

“She’ll be gone, just as soon as I take down Rasmus.”
