“Gone? Gone where?”

“I’ll have to either send her back to Estonia, or I’ll have to fucking kill her, won’t I?”

As I spoke, Tam’s gaze drifted over my shoulder, and his eyes widened a fraction.

Fuck. I knew without looking who he’d seen. Even so, I turned in that direction.

The girls all stood in the doorway, matching expressions of discomfort on their faces. Kaja’s was the worst, though, her dark eyes wet with unshed tears. She’d overheard what I had said.

“Just do it then, Leo,” she spat. “If you’re going to kill me, get it over with already. I’d rather know what’s coming and prepare myself for it than live with false hope.”

Hallie put her arm around Kaja’s shoulders. “He’s not going to kill you, Kaja. He’s full of horseshit. And anyway, we wouldn’t let him, would we, Tam?”

“This isn’t our business, Hallie. Don’t get involved.”

Hallie’s lips parted in a silent O of disbelief. “Don’t get involved? We alreadyareinvolved. We were involved the moment we picked them up from the airport. If you think I’m going to stand around and let some innocent girl be murdered just because of who her father is, you can think again. Honestly, Leo, I thought better of you. After what happened with Jodie, you’re becoming just as bad as the man who killed her.”

“Hallie—” Tam started.

I put out my hand to stop him. “It’s okay, Tam. She has a point, but Kaja is mine now, and I’ll decide what happens to her, got it?”

Hallie wasn’t finished. “No, that’s bullshit. She’s a person, not a thing to own.”

Kaja spoke up. “Just shoot me right now, Leo, and you’ll be able to hand my father my body before you kill him, too. Isn’t that what you really want? An eye for an eye?”

I stared at her. “I don’t know what I want.”

“You’re only keeping me alive so you’ve got a willing hole you can fuck.”

I refused to crumble. “What can I say, they’re tight, wet holes, and I didn’t see you complaining.”

Kaja stared at me, as though silently begging me not to be the man I was, and then turned and ran back out of the room.

“Kaja, wait,” Hallie called, then she glared at me. “I like you, Leo. I know how much you loved Jodie. I’ve been cutting you some slack because of losing Jodie and your brother so close together, but if you’re not careful, your grief is going to turn you into a fucking monster.”

She went after Kaja. It occurred to me she might decide to take Kaja out of the house. Maybe she’d even give her some money to run with or would take her to Marlon Wynter’s territory and hide her out in one of his hotels. I was surprised that instead of being furious at the possibility of her going against me, I was relieved. Would Kaja be safer with the Wynters? When Rasmus came looking for her, he’d just have me to deal with, and then after that, Kaja would be free to do whatever she wanted.

Even if that involved leaving me.

I’d be alone again, just as I should be. I was too messed up to have anyone else in my life.

But now I’d had a taste of her, I wanted her. I craved her. I didn’t want her staying with the Wynters. I wanted her in my bed, under me, naked and writhing and moaning my name as I made her come over and over. How was I supposed to go back to the void I’d been in before I’d first seen her?

But now she thought I wanted her dead. Maybe that shouldn’t have come as a surprise to her, since I hadn’t exactly made a secret of my plans, but clearly things had changed between us.

Was I only just now starting to realise that?

“We don’t have time to deal with this right now, brother,” Tam said. “I told you I didn’t want you distracted. We have to make sure everything is in place for tonight. We can’t afford for this to go wrong.”

I didn’t tell him I felt as though Kaja was safer in Hallie’s hands than mine. “Okay, fine.”

I felt uncomfortable not going after her, but perhaps it was for the best. I trusted Hallie to do the right thing.
