“God, Leo.” I shook my head. “What the fuck are we doing?”

How could I bring myself to trust a man who had kidnapped me, strangled me, had said he wanted me dead? Maybe he was changing his mind, but couldn’t he just as easily change it back again?

A fist hammered on the bathroom door. “You in there, Leo?”

Leo half turned towards the door. “Yeah, Tam. We’ll be out in a second.”

We took a minute to clean ourselves up again and got dressed and then went out to meet everyone.

Hallie was sitting on the sofa, her skin splotchy from crying, her eyes rimmed red. Tam looked grim-faced and was pacing back and forth.

“What’s the plan?” Leo asked.

Tam stopped pacing. “We have a new problem. We don’t know where Jayden is. Hallie thinks he’s on his way to the Gilligans.”

“Fuck, that idiot.” Leo shook his head. “But it’s not our problem, is it? Let him do what he wants. They did kill his father.”

“Hallie thinks he’s going to end up dead. Jayden might not be my responsibility, but Hallie is. I can’t let her lose her father and brother in the same day.”

Hallie threw Tam a cautious half smile.

Leo nodded. “Okay, we’ll drive out there, see if we can spot him.”

“I’m coming,” Hallie insisted, getting to her feet. “He’s my brother. I’m not going to just sit around and wait for you all to find him.”

Tam put his hand to her belly. “You can’t think about only yourself right now. You’re carrying a life, our child. You need to protect the baby.”

“No, I’m coming with you. I’m Marlon Wynter’s daughter. I’m as invested in this business as any of you. Just because I’m a woman and pregnant doesn’t make me incapable.”

His expression hardened. “I swear to God, Hallie, I will lock you in the fucking house before I even consider you coming with us.”

She glared at him. “You are not locking me in the house.”

“Wanna try me? Now do you want me to help your brother or not?”

“He won’t listen to you, Tam. You know he won’t. But he’ll listen to me.”

Tam softened slightly. “Jesus Christ. Fine. But don’t you dare take any risks.”

“Same goes for you,” she said. “It’s bad enough that you’ve just lived through a bombing without you giving the Gilligans a second opportunity to kill you.”

He caught her by the waist and pulled her in to kiss her mouth.

I looked to Leo. “Should I come, too?”

“No, you stay here,” he said. “This has nothing to do with you. It’s better that you don’t get involved. Try to get some sleep.”

He was right, I didn’t have a hand in this game. I wasn’t a part of their family. Right now, I wasn’t part of anyone’s family. I was an outsider.
