I put the car back into gear and drove out onto the road again. We left Gilligan’s street, and I took a right to bring us onto the road running alongside it.

“Look, there!” Hallie pointed at the black Bentley parked a little farther down.

Jayden.

I just hoped he was still in the vehicle.

I pulled in behind the Bentley, and Hallie threw open her door and jumped out.

“Hallie!” Tam yelled, climbing out to stop her.

We didn’t know what the setup was going to be. Jayden could already be hurt or dead for all we knew. The Gilligans might have spotted him and be watching the vehicle for the rest of us to turn up.

But she reached the car without anything happening and hammered on the passenger window. “Jay! What the fuck are you doing?”

Her brother emerged from the driver’s side; a long dark-haired, leather-jacketed fury.

“You know what the fuck I’m doing. I’m getting revenge.”

“This isn’t the right time, Jay. Come home. Let’s put a better plan together.”

He snorted. “Now is exactly the right time. You should be on my side, Hallie. You’re betraying the Wynter name. Are you more Cornell than Wynter now that you have a Cornell baby growing in your belly?”

“You can’t expect me to choose, Jay. Not now. I’m carrying your niece or nephew, who is also going to be a Cornell. We need to stick together now more than ever.”

“We can stick together, so long as sticking together means killing each and every one of the fucking Gilligans tonight.”

“We can talk about this—” Tam started.

“Fuck talking. Too much talking has been done already. I don’t see them sitting around talking.”

“We don’t know what they’re doing,” Hallie said. “We don’t even know they were responsible for the bomb.”

“Of course they were fucking responsible. Are you making excuses for them now, too, sis? What the fuck is wrong with you? First you take the Cornell’s side and now the Gilligans. You’re either with me or against me, and if you’re against me, then that means we’re no longer family.”

She shook her head. “Don’t say that.”

“You’re leaving me with no choice. I don’t need your help anyway. I’ll bring on every man I can find onto the Wynter payroll, and I won’t stop until every Gilligan is dead. I’ll light up North London like it’s fucking fireworks night. You understand me?”

“I understand, and we’ll do it together. All of us.” She looked around at Tam who nodded in agreement. “You say you want to bring in more men, well, you’ve got people here, right at your disposal.”

His eyes narrowed a fraction. “You’re saying the Cornells will help?”

Tam nodded. “We’ll help, but it can’t be tonight.”

Hallie continued. “If you try tonight, on your own, you’ll end up dead, and then I’ll have no one.”

His expression flickered at the idea of Hallie being alone. I wasn’t about to point out that she had us now.

She obviously picked up that she’d made a dent in his resolve. “Please, Jay. I love you. Don’t make me live without my brother as well as my dad.”

His shoulders sagged, and his chin trembled. “Fuck, Hallie.”

She risked reaching out her hand, touching the arm of his leather jacket. “I know, Jay. I know.”

He wilted and allowed her to pull him to her, and she hugged him tight.

I blew out a breath. It had been the right thing bringing Hallie. Neither Tam nor I would have been able to talk Jay down like she had.
