“Where did he go?” I asked her.

Her gaze slid away from mine. She knew.

“Where did he go, Kaja?”

“I don’t want you to follow him. He’s only told me because he knows you’ll go and then he’ll kill you.”

My lip curled in a snarl. “Not if I kill him first.”

“That might not happen.”

“You have to tell me, Kaja. If you don’t, he’ll come back, and we’ll have to fight him anyway. I’d rather take him down first.”

She must have accepted the truth in my words. A man like Rasmus Valk was never going to just give up.

“He said he was at Bexley Farm.”

“Bexley Farm,” I repeated.

“Leo, please don’t go there. It’s what he wants. You’re walking right into his trap.”

“Good, then I’ll know exactly where he’ll be.”

“He’ll be waiting for you—him and his men. They’re all armed.”

“You know I can’t let him get away with this. First Jodie, and now you. If he’s willing to do this to his own daughter, what else is he capable of? He needs putting down, unless, of course, you want him alive.”

She closed her eyes. “How am I supposed to answer that? It would be like ordering a hit on my only surviving parent.”

I softened my tone. “After what he’s just done to you, how could you not want him dead?”

She didn’t reply.

I caught her chin between my fingers and lightly kissed her mouth. “I’m not an idiot, Kaja. I know I might have done some stupid shit in my time, but I won’t just walk into the trap your father has set.”

Hallie appeared in the doorway with more towels and bandages and some loose clothing.

I kissed Kaja again. “I’m going to leave you in Hallie’s care. I need to talk to Tam.”

“Leo...”

“It’ll be all right. This has to come to an end now.”

Hallie gave me a nod to say she’d take care of Kaja, and I left them to it and went in search of my brother.

I found him in the grounds, checking tyre marks in the gravel.

“Rasmus is at Bexley Farm. I’m going to kill the son of a bitch.”

He shook his head at me. “What the fuck is going on with you, Leo? You need to figure out what you want. It wasn’t long ago that you were contemplating killing her to get back at Rasmus, but now you’re what? Trying to save her?”

“I want Rasmus to pay. That’s all I ever wanted. I just went about it the wrong way. I don’t want to see another innocent woman hurt.”

“You don’t want to see another innocent woman hurt, or just not another innocent woman who you happen to be fucking?”

“It’s not just fucking, Tam. I care about her, and I think she cares about me. I know I screwed up, but I finally feel like I’m alive again. I can’t lose that. I can’t lose her. You know he’ll come back for her if I don’t end this.”

He nodded and pulled me in for a man hug, smacking me on the shoulder.
