“I’ve got your back, Leo. We’re brothers, the only ones we have left.”

“Thank you, Tam.”

Together, we went back inside the house.

Hallie and Kaja were out of the bathroom. “I thought she’d be more comfortable in the lounge,” Hallie said.

Kaja was walking gingerly, and Hallie had her arm around her shoulders.

Jay came to join them.

“You need to protect the girls while we deal with this,” Tam said to him. “Just in case they come back.”

He nodded. “I can do that.”

I needed more information.

“What kind of car was your father driving, Kaja? Did you see?”

“No, I didn’t get a look.”

Tam spoke up. “She doesn’t need to have seen them. I have security cameras.” He held up his phone. “I can see them on the app.”

I tried not to let my frustration show. “I wish you’d thought to check them while we were out.”

“I hadn’t known I needed to check them, and besides, I was kind of preoccupied with everything else that had happened tonight.”

Maybe in Tam’s mind Kaja was nothing more than a distraction, but I realised she’d become far more than that to me. This wasn’t just about wanting Rasmus Valk dead, though I wanted that more than ever after what he’d done to Kaja. It was about making sure she was safe.

“Here,” Tam said, shoving the phone into my hand. “That’s them.”

I looked down at the screen. Sure enough, there was a sleek black Mercedes S-Class parked at the back of Tam’s property. There was no one in sight, so I assumed they’d been inside the house, beating up Kaja, when this part of the footage had been taken.

“How many men did he have with him?” I asked Kaja.

“Two,” she said, “that I saw, anyway.”

I glanced at Tam. “We can handle that.”

“He’ll be waiting for us.”

“I don’t care. This ends now, one way or another.”
