I reached up and grabbed the front of his shirt, yanking him down the few steps that led up to the caravan door. He lost his balance and fell. The gun that had been in his hand clattered to the ground. Tam stepped in and kicked it out of the way.

Before Rasmus had the chance to get back to his feet, I climbed on top of him, pinning his arms down with my knees. We were both big men, but Rasmus had me on weight. It wasn’t my strength that kept him pinned, however, but the muzzle of the gun I jammed to his temple.

Tam stood over both of us, also with his weapon aimed, but looking around to make sure no one else was coming.

“Fuck y—” Rasmus started, but I didn’t let him finish.

“This is for Jodie,” I snarled. “This is for Kaja.”

I pulled the trigger, the crack earsplittingly loud. The gunshot would be heard, alerting the travellers to there being an intruder in their midst, but there was nothing I could do about that.

Rasmus fell back against the ground, half his head splattered against the mud.

In one shot, I’d made Kaja an orphan.

“Hey! You over there!”

Fuck, we’d been seen.

Tam grabbed me and hauled me back to my feet.

“Go, go, go!” he yelled.

We set off at a run, back towards where we’d left my vehicle.

Gunshots chased us, and I ducked, the skim of a bullet whizzing right past my head. That had been close. Too close. Tam twisted around and returned fire, buying us a few precious seconds, and then we kept going, running back towards the cover of the trees, to where my vehicle was still parked.

We reached the Range Rover, both of us breathing hard. I’d left the keys in the ignition to make a fast escape, and we both threw ourselves inside. More gunshots shattered through the early morning, and one hit the side of the car with a metallic ping. I ducked and slammed the Range Rover into gear and jammed my foot down on the pedal. Within seconds, the powerful vehicle was barrelling through the terrain, leaving the Irish and Rasmus’s remaining men behind us.

Fuck.

I sat back in the driver’s seat and allowed myself to breathe.

Would the Estonians try anything now they no longer had Rasmus at their helm? I hoped this was over.

“Do you think the Irish knew it was us?” I asked Tam as I drove through the city.

He nodded. “It’s a possibility, yes.”

“You think they’ll come after us?”

He pursed his lips. “For one torched car? I doubt it.”

“What about in revenge for Rasmus?”

“I can’t see them starting a war for someone who wasn’t even their own.”

I tightened my fingers around the steering wheel. “I hope you’re right. We’ve got enough trouble going on with losing Marlon Wynter without having to deal with them as well.”

The balance of power in the city was shifting, and I didn’t like it.

Nerves filled my stomach as I drove back through the gates of Tam’s house. I was anxious to see Kaja again. I had just killed her father. I still had his blood on my hands and clothes.

Would she end up hating me for it?

The front door opened, and Hallie came running out. Tam climbed out of the car and caught her as she ran to him, swinging her up so her legs wrapped around his hips. They kissed deeply, murmuring words of love and gratitude to one another that Tam had come home safely.

Kaja was waiting for me in the entrance hall, her arms folded across her body, a mixture of relief and pain in her eyes. Her bruised and bloodied face filled me with rage once again, but there was nothing more I could do.
