“Have you had any hair loss?”

“Sure. I’m not a spring chicken any longer.”

“Have you had any stomach issues?”

“Look, Doctor, I have the same symptoms as everybody over the age of thirty. How long will this take?”

“I can’t give you an exact timeframe. Each session is three hours long, but it could take a month or even a year. It just depends on how quickly your body expels the toxins. We’ll know more when we get the hair sample back. In the meantime, I’d like to hook you up to the dialysis machine and run a carbon filter through it. If it’s not as bad as I’m assuming, the three-hour treatment might be enough. Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing at this time.”

“A year. That’s not possible.”

“Again, that's the worst case. Is there someone I should contact to help you come to terms with this?”

It should be my wife, but she’s most likely the poisoner.

“No. I want this kept between you and me... not even the agency can find out. I’ll need to find the assassin.”

“It’s not going to be easy. Like I said, it’s illegal as are many other things people can get their hands on. It’s called the poisoner’s poison for a reason.”

Poisoner’s poison... the kind of poison someone like a pharmaceutical forensic scientist might have access to.

Oh, Gwenie, what have you done?

Giving the doctor his approval, twenty minutes later, he sat there with a port attached at his neck as he watched his blood flow out of his body.

Shaking himself out of that nightmare, he remembered the long three-hour sessions that he fortunately only needed for six weeks. He’d had no choice but to confide in his partner. She would have to cover his time away for the treatment. He never told Gwen. Instead, he became vigilant and suspicious of anything she cooked or offered him to drink. He wasn’t sure if she left him six months later because he hadn’t died or if she was afraid he’d discover the truth.

But he would find out why she poisoned him. Then he’d figure out how to move past his blind anger and once and for all leave behind the woman he’d given his heart to.

CHAPTERFOUR

Ghost and Ivy remained in the conference room after Byte and Voodoo left. Neither one spoke for a full minute, then Ghost asked the question Ivy had been asking herself.

“Do you think Carter is behind all of this?”

Ivy didn’t answer immediately. Ghost liked that about her. She never felt rushed or pressured to respond. She thought out all the scenarios and possible impact before answering.

“I’m trying to reconcile the man I met while at the bureau with the monster Voodoo described. Granted, I didn’t know him that well, but I think I’m a pretty good judge of character. How could I have been so far off?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out myself. I spent hours with the man before we made the offer. He seemed like a stand-up kind of guy.”

“But he is a spy. We are trained to lie very well.”

“And then there’s Voodoo. We’ve trusted her to have our backs on numerous occasions. I still do,” Ghost admitted.

“I think that’s the crux of the situation. Voodoo isn’t someone who’d exaggerate a situation. She’s also not someone who’d run from a problem. At least, not the Voodoo we know. Whoever Gwen was, sounds nothing like the woman we know.”

“Then there’s Carter’s allegations,” Ghost reminded her.

“Tell me what he said when you led him out of the building.”

“He wasn’t as smug as he’d been in here, but he denied specifically coming for Voodoo.”

“Why do you say that?”

“When I asked him what that scene was all about, he shrugged and said he had some unresolved issues he needed his wife to clear up. Honestly, I didn’t spend much time chatting him up. I’m not happy that he accepted a position with us under false pretenses.”

“I’m not either. What about the threat against his life?”
