Page 11 of Uncovering Voodoo

“He wasn’t specific, only that Gwen, as he called her, had disappeared without a trace five years earlier, at the same time he’d had an attempt on his life. Obviously, he’s thinking the two are related.”

“As would I,” Ivy agreed.

“Me too. I can’t reconcile it though. I’m not foolish enough to think Voodoo has never killed someone—we both know she has—but it’s not her go-to reaction.”

“Nor is running away, yet that’s what she plans on doing now.”

“The fear and shock this morning were real.”

“I felt it too. Justin, I don’t know what happened all those years ago, but if we want to keep Voodoo, we have to investigate this. If she’s correct and Carter is behind all of this, he will pay for his sins.”

“And if he’s not?”

“Then we find out who it is and end this farce once and for all.”

“I agree. Now, where do we start?”

“I need to call Dad and make arrangements for her. Then we need to get Byte and Chaos in the same room and let them work their magic.”

“And what about Carter?”

“We tell him the truth. We are not going to be party to their domestic dispute, and until we have answers, his offer is on hold. Then we tail him and find out what he’s hiding.”

“I think we need to get with Byte on Faulkner’s background. I don’t want to be blindsided again next week when he’s supposed to start.”

“Agreed. What a mess! This is why I let you handle all the managerial work. I’d rather take a gun and force the truth out. This whole HR thing is for the birds. All of this could be resolved with a tranquilizer dart and two metal chairs.”

“Let’s leave interrogation as our last resort,” Ghost said and kissed his wife on her cheek.

“See, human resource junk is always slowing us down.”

The two hugged briefly, then opened the door and began their search for the truth. One or both of them were assassins who’d obviously failed at landing their mark.

The last thing ALIAS needed was for either to finish what they’d started. Ivy watched as Ghost pulled Seven into his office, while she closed her office door and called her father.

“I need a favor, Dad, and it’s a big one...”

Upstairs Voodoo pacedByte’s apartment. Over the past few months, she’d watched Byte begin to make the place feel like a home. She still didn’t have photos or even wall art hanging, but there was a sofa, end table, and the mattress wasn’t lying on the floor any longer. She hoped Byte would someday confide in her, but like herself, there were just some secrets best kept private. Voodoo understood that better than most.

Byte held up a small box and gave Voodoo a very mischievous smile.

“What is that?”

“Your way out of the building. Your husband is still lurking across the street. For a spy, he’s not very covert.”

“Stop calling him my husband. Go back to Cowardly Carter or Cocky Carter or anything else. And he’s not trying to be covert. He wants me to know he’s out there... waiting.”

“Well, Cockwad Carter will be waiting to see you for a long time when I’m done with you.”

“And what are you doing with me?”

“Turning you into me, of course.”

There were obvious differences between Voodoo and Byte. Voodoo was five foot eight, whereas Byte was barely over five feet. Then there was their hair. Voodoo had kept hers cropped for years. It gave off a mysterious vibe about her. It also kept her from having to dye her hair, as she initially had. Byte had her signature blue hair. The only thing blue on Voodoo was her eyes. They’d been called translucent, mythical, soul-searching, and beautiful. There was no way to change that. She had undergone Lasik, so she no longer had to wear glasses or contacts, but that hadn’t changed the color of her eyes. For a few jobs, she wore colored contact lenses, but refused to wear them outside of a job.

“Here,” Byte said as she removed and tossed a bottle to Voodoo from the box.
