“Where are you?”

“Florida.”

“Do you need me to come get you?”

Daisy, also known as Chaos, had become her go-to hacker. Gwen knew all of Daisy’s secrets, just as Daisy knew hers.

“It’s time.”

“Don’t worry, sis. I’m going to help you restart your life. Gwen, you can trust me.”

“I know.” That was the last conversation Gwen had with her sister. Voodoo later confided in Chaos as to why Gwen had to die in order to protect the innocent. What happened to those people on the plane could never happen again. Her husband hadn’t cared who he hurt while trying to kill her. To save others, Gwen would have to die.

PARTI

CHAPTERONE

“Oh my God! Oh my God!” Voodoo kept softly chanting.

“He found me.... How? I was so careful.” Voodoo was speaking to herself, ignoring the stares and shocked faces of her friends.

“Voodoo, look at me,” Ivy instructed. Only she couldn’t. She had to leave. She couldn’t put anyone else in danger. Carter had already shown how much he wanted her dead.

“I don’t understand,” Ivy tried saying, but Voodoo rose from her chair in the conference room and began gathering her things.

Ivy placed her hand over Voodoo’s cold, trembling one.

“Voodoo,” Ivy carefully said, as if she was afraid Voodoo would run. But she had no choice. Carter had found her. Shaking her head, she met her friend’s eyes.

“I have to go.” It was as much a plea as it was a statement.

“No, you don’t! Let us help you.”

“You can’t,” Voodoo sadly admitted as she tried to hold back the tears gathering in her eyes. If she didn’t leave the room immediately, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to stop them. She’d finally made a life for herself. She was happy. She had friends, real friends, and a job she loved, and she’d felt safe for the first time in years. Why was he still looking for her? It didn’t make sense. Why not move on? She’d given him his freedom when Chaos added her name to the flight manifest.

“Yes, we can,” Byte reassured. “I’m not sure why you think you have to run because I can wipe your husband off the face of the earth. With just a few keystrokes, he can be sitting in an Israeli prison by dusk.”

It hadn’t been the first time such an offer was made. Chaos was chomping at the bit to remove Carter from her sister’s life.

“No,” Voodoo replied. She felt drained and defeated.

“Sit down and talk to us,” Ivy pleaded. “If later—after the shock has worn off—you still want to go, we’ll help you escape. But, Voo, give us a chance.”

Voodoo was warring with herself. If she stayed, Carter would find a way to kill her once and for all. He’d shown his determination. He’d found her after five years of her hiding in plain sight.

Voodoo jumped when there was a knock at the conference room door. Ghost had pushed her husband out of the room and slammed the door behind him. Ivy had immediately locked it. Now someone was knocking and asking for entrance.

“It’s me. I’m alone. Let me in, please,” Ghost asked on the other side of the door.

Ivy squeezed Voodoo’s hand before rising to unlock the door and allow access to her husband. She immediately relocked the door after he entered.

“I feel like there’s something I’m missing,” Ghost said. “Carter didn’t seem shocked to see you. Is he really your husband?”

Voodoo nodded and began telling her story, starting with the first day they’d met until the night she ran away and became Maxi Wynn.

“Wait, can we start over?” Ghost asked Voodoo. The news that their new employee was Voodoo’s husband had taken everyone in the staff meeting by surprise. Well, almost everyone. Byte had figured it out before they’d made the offer. Unfortunately, she’d been in London assisting Seven and his brother, Ryan, with an assignment and hadn’t relayed the information soon enough.

“I met Carter while I was working at the CIA. My birth name is Gwen, or Gwendolyn, but she’s been missing and presumed dead for years. It was my only option if I wanted to stay alive and protect others.”
