Page 45 of Uncovering Voodoo

Instead of answering her with words, he lowered his lips and gently took possession of her. Vanessa watched as Gwen’s body slackened, while Carter’s hold on her tightened.

“Did you hear that?” Valarie asked. “That moan should’ve been ours.”

Vanessa ignored the whine and kept her senses directed to the couple two feet from her bumper.

“I’ve missed you. Every single day,” Gwen admitted.

“Me too.”

“Every.” Kiss.

“Single.” Kiss.

“Day.” Kiss

“And nights.” This time Carter hadn’t given her a lightly placed kiss. Instead, he held her head where he waited for her invitation to deepen the kiss.

Vanessa watched as Carter made love to his wife’s lips and she felt her heart break one last time. She’d lost. The game was over.

“Stop it!” Venom demanded. “You are such a disappointment. I’d wish you would kill yourself and free the rest of us, but you’re selfish enough to take us down with you. You’re a waste of a body. I should’ve been the dominant one. At least when Valarie is in charge, I get some relief. If it’s you or the bed-wetter, I get nothing but anxiety... and I don’t do well when I’m anxious.”

“I need to go,” Vanessa softly told herself.

“You need to kill them both,” Venom argued. “And we will. Take us back to the hotel. I need to do some planning, and you crying over here and never looking away from the man threatening to ruin us, is distracting me. Now go!”

Carter held Voodoo against him a few seconds longer after Vanessa drove away. He knew Ghost would follow her and he needed a moment to recover from their kiss.

There was no way she could’ve faked that. He knew her body and it was turned on. She had to have felt his own body’s reaction to their kiss. Now what to do with it?

“She’s gone,” he said, instead of asking her the question that was boggling him too.

“Right,” she said, and he watched as her walls went up.

“Are you okay?”

“Dandy... just dandy, Carter.”

The minute she backed away, Carter felt fear rising in him. What if he couldn’t keep her?

“We’re not done, Gwen.”

She wanted him to tellher... not Gwen. She was no longer alive, and until he understood that, there wasn’t anything else to talk about. Every time he called her Gwen, she felt those walls strengthening.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

Ivy had her phone on speaker as she was talking with Carter and Voodoo.

“We followed her to her motel.”

“Motel or hotel?” Carter asked, knowing there were major differences, especially when it came to executing a takedown. No one wanted to kill Vanessa. Even these hardened assassins knew when to pull back. For Voodoo, that decision didn’t sit well with her.

Vanessa was still a threat to her and her sister. Even though she knew who to look for, it still meant Voodoo would have to be on constant alert. She’d done that for five years. She was ready to move on. Leave the past in the past. Let bygones be bygones. And any other clichés she could think of.

“Oh, it’s a motel, and not a nice one at that. I don’t think anyone will look twice if it gets a little loud over here.”

“I’d hoped to take her down without any potential witnesses. Do you think we can get her away from there?” Carter asked.

“That leaves us with only a few options if we don’t want to involve others,” Voodoo stated.
