“On who? Who will it be easier for? Is this about that Brit... the one you’re also married to?”

“Good heavens, Carter. This has nothing to do with Seven. That was a bad night for everyone, but I’ve owned up to my part. I met with him andhisgirlfriend and cleared the air. It meant nothing... more than nothing. Neither of us can even remember if anything happened.”

“Are you seeing anyone else?”

Carter should let the subject drop, but he didn’t know when he’d be alone with her again. He needed answers.

“No, Carter. I’ve gone on dates in the last five years, and some of them I slept with. I’m not telling you this to hurt you, but to wake you up. You may not have known I was alive, but I knew you were. I knew I was married, and yet I still slept with these men. That’s who I am now.”

“A bed hopper? Is that what you are telling me? Are you only interested in one-night stands or short summer flings?”

Voodoo rolled her neck. She was getting a crick from the way she was sitting in the car, but she refused to look away. She wanted Carter to see her, the woman she was now.

“There was a time when I would’ve burst out crying if you thought so little of me. That’s not the case anymore. Carter, I’ve had a hard five years. You are still in love with Gwen. You haven’t a clue who Voodoo is, and honestly, I’m not sure you can separate the two. For now, let’s settle this thing with Vanessa, and we’ll talk when this is all wrapped up.”

Understanding the roadblock for what it was, Carter clicked on his seat belt, waited for hers to also click, and put the car in drive.

She believes you won’t love the new Gwen, he reasoned to himself.

Maxi, not Gwen,he practically yelled. He knew there was a difference, but there was also something exciting about trying to discover the woman she’d become. The phoenix that rose from the ashes. The operative that used potions, poisons, and toxins as her sniper rifle. He wanted to know this woman. Now, he just had to convince her to give him the time to really get to know her.

But first, he had to deal with the woman who’d given her heart to a man who wouldn’t ever accept it. As angry as he was, he also felt sorry for Vanessa. Her life would never be the same, nor would any of theirs after tonight.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

“Stop stalling. Just get us inside and I’ll take care of everything,” Venom told Vanessa.

“I don’t want you to hurt him. I love him.”

They’d had the same argument after she accepted Carter’s suggestion for meeting at ALIAS.

“You are a fool!” Venom said once she clicked off the phone.

“He won’t hurt me.”

“You are fooling yourself if you think he loves you,” Venom spat.

“He could’ve if Vanessa would have been stronger,” Valarie argued.

Venom was now in control, and there wasn’t anything Vanessa could do to stop him.

“Shut up! You all are so weak. Are you going to go and beg him to love you? Pathetic! I really wish you all could die and let me live. My life would be a whole lot easier without you two and the brat.”

Vanessa knew fighting Venom was useless. She was weak when it came to him. And as much as she hated him, she also needed him. He was her secret weapon, but she couldn’t control him like she had been able to in the past.

She walked slowly to the glass doors and prayed no one would answer when she knocked. Only she didn’t have to knock. Carter stood by the door and welcomed her inside.

“Are you feeling okay, Nessa? You look pale.”

“I’m fine. I just want this over with, Carter. Where do you want to go?”

“The team is in the conference room. Afterwards, you and I can talk privately in my apartment.”

“I really don’t care.” She was leaving the decision on when and where they were going to talk. Venom couldn’t blame her for that.

“Then let’s go to the conference room. We can go upstairs later if you still want to talk.”

She nodded and followed Carter into a crowded room. She should have demanded they go to his apartment first. She couldn't tell him everything, not with so many eyes watching her.
