Page 57 of Uncovering Voodoo

“I’m not her. Not anymore. You may be wanting a relationship with someone you don’t like.”

“Is that what is scaring you?”

“Yes, and other things.”

“Can we get together and talk? I want to get to know Maxi.”

“Not Voodoo?” She smirked.

“Let’s take one alias at a time. I think having multiple personalities is a little too much for me right now.”

“How are you doing with her death?”

“Despite everything, she was a good person. I know that seems like a stupid thing to say, considering she tried to kill us both and was responsible for her parents’ deaths and countless innocent lives. Geez, when I say it out loud, I should feel relieved that she’s dead.”

“But you’re not,” Voodoo stated.

“She was sick, and I hate that I missed the signs.”

“A lot of other people did too. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for her to do her job with all those voices in her head.”

“And she was a great field agent. I never worried that she wouldn’t have my back. It’s just shocking she hadn’t taken me out while on a mission.”

“Vanessa was trying to keep Venom at bay. It had to be a struggle. Did she have any family?”

“She had an aunt and uncle who’d taken her in after her parents’ deaths.”

“Will they have to exhume their bodies to get a cause of death?” Voodoo asked.

“No need. They died in a house fire. It was believed that Vanessa was alive because she’d been at a friend’s house for a sleepover. If Venom was correct, she must have snuck out at some point and started the fire.”

“What a mess. What has the agency said?”

“I flew up there a few days after it happened. They want to reopen all my jobs and see if she might have compromised our missions.”

“And did she?”

“Nah, I don’t think so, but the CIA is doing a little CYA.”

“No shock there.”

“So when can we address the real reason Byte set us up?” Carter asked as the waitress brought them their dinner and released her hand. She immediately felt the loss.

“And what topic do you want to talk about? There are several.”

“The one that set all of this into motion. Why didn’t you talk to me the first time your life was in danger? Why automatically assume it was me?”

“It felt too personal. The first time, I was being targeted by something within my wheelhouse. In hindsight, I should’ve confronted you, but I was different back then. Maybe it was easier to not know the truth.”

“And was it?” Carter asked.

“Of course not. I gave up everything. Had I talked to you then, I might have been able to work with you to find the person trying to kill me. You were a powerful man.”

“I was a field operative.”

“Which for a scientist, that’s pretty high up there. I knew you had all the resources and skills to pull off a hit. While I might not have understood everything about your job, I knew enough.”

“Enough to assume the worst.”
