Page 60 of Uncovering Voodoo

“Trying to reenact a little Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore scene?”

“Let’s hope not.” He chuckled. “Since one of them is dead.”

“What else?” she quizzed.

“Well, if you agree to a third date, I thought we could do something a little more adventurous. There are zip lines at Lake Travis. Have you ever done that?”

“No, but I wouldn’t mind trying. Anything else?”

“Lots. A night at the symphony, dinner and a movie, maybe a visit to the legendary bat caves in the area.”

“There’s one not far from here, just a few blocks over. We could see if they are out and about tonight.”

“I’d love that,” Carter said as he maneuvered the sports car to the restaurant’s valet.

While Voodoo waited for Carter to finish talking with the valet, she looked at her reflection in the brass doors. As he drew closer, she had to admit they looked great together. They always had. But the last five years had changed them, emotionally and physically.

Carter reached for her hand and led her into the restaurant, then opted to sit beside her in the booth. He wasn’t sure when he’d be that close again. He hoped it was soon, but he’d vowed to not rush her.

After they placed their mojito orders, Voodoo let the jazz music move her body. She was unaware of her swaying until Carter extended his hand and asked her to dance.

“I didn’t think you liked to dance.”

“If it means I can hold you close, then I’m a fan.”

“Such a smooth talker.”

“The smoothest.”

She rested her head against his shoulder. His scent was familiar and comforting.

“You wear the same cologne.”

“It’s the one you bought me on our first anniversary.”

“I remember. I’m surprised you didn’t change it.”

“Why would I?”

“Memories, I assume. Maybe it was too hard to keep things around that reminded you of me.”

“Is that what you did?”

“No, not really. I mean, I know a few things are different, but my tastes are still the same.”

“Do you really believe you are so different from Gwen?”

“According to my sister, I’m the same where it counts, only Maxi is made of tougher skin.”

“Um,” he rumbled. She felt his words more than she could hear them.

“Um, what?”

“Nothing. It’s probably a second or third date conversation.”

“Why not first?”

“Because I want to have a second, third, and forever. I don’t want to tilt the scale to my disadvantage.”
