Page 8 of Uncovering Voodoo

“Those are all good questions, and right now we don’t have the answers, but if you give us a chance, we will get them,” Ghost requested.

The room was silent with all three waiting for Voodoo to reply. Could she walk away and still not have the answers to those questions? She knew what she had to do. Now that he knew she was alive, nowhere was completely safe, so it was best to stay nearby.

“Fine. I’ll stay, but you’re not cutting me out of the investigation.”

“I didn’t expect you would be. You need the truth.”

Only Voodoo already knew the truth. On the off chance Carter wasn’t responsible for the plane crash, the other incidents were proof of his betrayal. She’d let them do their own investigation, but she wasn’t going to sit by and wait. She needed an escape plan.

“I’m calling my sister. She can provide you with all the proof she’d found.”

“I can’t wait to meet her,” Byte said with pure excitement.

“Let’s get this over with,” Voodoo said as she called Chaos. She needed someone on her side, as it appeared Ivy and Ghost wanted to give Carter the benefit of the doubt. She, however, would never turn her back on her estranged husband, not ever again.

“Daisy, it’s me. Carter’s found me and has now involved my employer.”

“Gwenie, this isn’t good.”

“Tell me about it. I need you to work with Byte and ALIAS to find out the truth.”

“What truth? We know what happened. We have proof, should he try to extort you. The fact that he’s tracked you down after five years is all the proof I need. I hid you extremely well, and Carter doesn’t have the skills to uncover the truth. So who else has he involved in his hunt?”

“All good questions,” Ivy answered.

“I guess you’re Ivy. Who else is in the room?” Chaos’ tone made it clear she didn’t appreciate being on speakerphone.

“Sorry, Daisy. Byte, Ivy, and Ghost are here. They were here when Carter outed himself as my husband.”

“Wait! Are you telling me Carter walked into your place of employment?”

“Worse, he accepted a job offer.”

“We didn’t know the history,” Ghost said in their defense.

“Chaos, it’s Byte. Can we talk offline? I want to do everything I can to get Creepy Carter out of Voodoo’s life permanently.”

Chaos instructed her sister to provide them with a disposable phone number.

Chaos never conducted business on the same line. She had a secured one she kept for her sister only, and different phone numbers for her parents, landlord, and other services that required a contact number. Besides those two permanent lines, she used burners for everything else.

After disconnecting the call, Voodoo stood and gathered her stuff. She needed to get out of there and for all she knew, Carter was waiting for her outside, or worse, at her apartment.

“Where is he?” she asked, directing her question to Ghost.

“He’s gone. I personally walked him out.”

But that didn’t mean he was gone or that he wasn’t nearby. As if understanding her distrust, Byte offered to let her go to her apartment, which was on-site. Nodding, Voodoo looked around the table and wondered if she’d be alive to talk to her friends again. She left the conference room in a far different state than the morning had begun.

She wasn’t Gwen, she reminded herself. She was Voodoo, the assassin. Carter might have found Gwen, but he’d learn just how deadly Voodoo was and how she wasn’t his meek little wife anymore.

I’ve got this. I will survive. Carter is never going to hurt me again.

CHAPTERTHREE

Carter still couldn’t believe he’d found her. She looked good, no better than good. She looked fierce... but he also saw fear. He wanted answers. He wanted to know, why did she leave, why was she afraid of him, and more importantly, why did she try to kill him five years ago?

He’d noticed she’d been wound tight their last year of marriage, but he chalked it up to her job assignments. As much as she didn’t want to be tied to the CIA, she lived for the types of jobs the agency needed her for. They’d had numerous conversations on why she refused to become a full-time researcher with the agency. She hadn’t given him a reasonable explanation, only that she didn’t like how they worked. He’d pressed for examples, but she’d remained tight-lipped, using her NDA as her out. No matter how high his clearance was, she kept true to her word and didn’t speak about her assignments. It drove him mad at times, and Nessa didn’t help, always putting doubts in his mind.
