I hadn’t stood a chance.

“Kiss me, Slugger,” he ordered, still seated on his bike, and I moved my feet quickly, anxious to feel him against me.

He didn’t disappoint, because the moment I was within reaching distance, he pulled me forward until I was pressed to his side and his arm was wrapped around my waist.

It wasn’t a tentative kiss. I never knew what I was getting with Weston and tonight he just went for it. He punished my mouth with a kiss that warmed the whole length of my body.

Backing out of our embrace, I grinned up at him. “I don’t have hot dogs.”

He threw his head back and laughed and laughed. The deep brackets around his mouth looked like home. I wanted to crawl into that smile. I wanted to live in that laugh.

Reaching behind him, he grabbed a sling bag that he attached to his bike. He leaned over and handed me the black bag.

I took it from him, wondering what the hell was in the bag.

“Go on.” He nodded at me.

I reached in and pulled out a shiny, black helmet that was a lot lighter than the one of Weston’s I usually wore. But the really impressive part was that it had a pink and dark purple floral pattern all over it. It was girlie and lightweight and had a little shield to cover my eyes.

“It’s mine?” I asked, beyond surprised.

“It’s yours,” he answered, taking it from me and pushing it down on my head with a grin like he couldn’t wait to see me in it. He snapped me in and tightened the straps at the bottom and looked me over. “Perfect,” he whispered.

I felt guilty. It was probably an expensive present. And he didn’t need to buy me a helmet for his bike. I was fine using his.

“You didn’t have to get me this. I’m happy to use yours,” I said, even though I was in no way trying to remove the beautiful helmet from my head.

He leaned forward and cradled his hands around my jaw, pressing a quick kiss to my lips. “I did have to. I have to keep you safe, Slugger.” His hands tightened around my face at his omission and I knew that he did have to. For him.

And then I thought of all the ways over the last couple of months that he’d kept me safe over and over. Helping me with life and Parker. From the very beginning, he’d been there for me.

Even when he hadn’t even known my name and I’d come home from the club with him, he’d made sure to use a condom. That and every time since really.

And I knew he wanted to keep me safe because I wanted to keep him safe, too.

“Thank you. I love it,” I said, placing my hand over his on my face.

“Good,” he said. “You coming?” He motioned to the back of his bike. I thought of the first night together when he’d asked me that same question. We were a long way from friends with benefits now.

He used a hand to help me onto the back of his bike, and I wrapped my arms around his waist and laid my head on the top of his shoulder.

We raced through the streets quickly, and I lifted my head and laughed, feeling freer than I ever had in my life.

We only rode about four miles before we were stopped on the side of the road at a small food truck parked there.

Weston helped me off the bike and as we got closer to the food truck, I saw a lone picnic table next to the truck that said Relish It on the outside in green letters.

“Hot dogs,” I said.

Weston nodded. “Hot dogs.”

He ordered while I sat at the table and took my gorgeous helmet off. I was admiring it when he arrived with our food.

He placed two hot dogs in front of me and three in front of him as he sat across the picnic table from me. “I hope you like hot dogs.”

I grinned, unwrapping mine. “When you said you wanted hot dogs, I thought maybe you wanted me to make them.”

He shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. “Nah. I just thought maybe I’d take my girl on a date.”
