Reina’s there, smoking and making coffee. She looks at us and her expression doesn’t change. “The pilot’s in,” she says.
I go very still and slowly look at Peter.
He’s frowning at her, visibly confused. “Are you… sure?”
“Oui, I spoke to him just now.” She gestures at the door. “Whatever you did, he is now in.”
“That doesn’t make sense.” Peter sinks into a chair and tells Reina everything that happened during the meeting. I watch from the arm of the couch as Reina takes it all in, looking like she hardly believes the story he’s telling.
“It’s all true,” I confirm when she looks in my direction. “Seriously, I don’t have any idea what changed between when we left him and now, but—” I shrug, at a total loss.
Reina smokes quietly. She watches the window and I can see the gears working. Peter’s happy and satisfied expression is replaced with a simmering anger. I cross my legs and try to hold on to the contentment and crazy joy I felt back in the bedroom but I can’t manage to keep myself from spiraling. What does this mean? Why would Galaki randomly change his mind? Peter’s right, it doesn’t make sense.
“He wants to meet with all of us tomorrow morning,” Reina says finally, breaking the silence. She exchanges a pointed look with Peter. “Somewhere public. In a big park. You know what this means, yes?”
“I’ll go alone.” Peter stands up and crosses his arms. “You two will stay here.”
“Peter,” I start to say but they both look at me like they want to throw me off a bridge. A month ago, I would’ve withered under their combined glares, but not anymore. “It’s insane to go alone. You can’t do that.”
“I know my father. I know how he sets these things up. The second we left Galaki, he approached the dumb asshole and made an offer.”
It clicks. So that’s why he changed his mind. Peter’s father offered him a deal to lure us into a trap. “All the more reason you can’t go. Forget about Galaki, we’ll find someone else.”
Peter shakes his head. “We’re running out of time and options. Galaki is still in play, I only have to figure out what my father offered and give him a better deal.”
“I agree,” Reina says. “You will go alone. I will make sure my stupid sister here doesn’t run off and do something extremely dumb.”
I throw my hands up in frustration. “Why are you even considering this? It’s obviously a setup and you’re going to walk right into it.”
