Micha walks around the bar and gets into my face. "What do you mean, nothing out of the ordinary? Why did you agree to the bail request?" Usually Micha has some type of smirk on his face, but right now, he looks murderous.

"It didn't seem necessary to fight that battle, besides, we still have to dig deeper into the evidence that we've gathered. We don't want to put the wrong person behind bars now do we?" I ask, raising an eyebrow at him for a second before I grab my bag and try to walk around him.

Micha grabs my wrist hard, making me yelp in surprised pain.

"He did it. What the hell are you talking about, putting the wrong person behind bars? I gave this case to you because I thought you'd do your fucking job. You have everything you need to get this case closed, stop fucking around and do it." He snarls at me.

I'm so shocked by the sudden violence in his tone and gestures that I can't speak. Goosebumps erupt over my skin as I stare at a man I once thought was at minimum a friend. Just as I'm about to get lost in my panic, my eyes dart over Micha's shoulder.

My goosebumps sizzle away with the burning rage shooting out of Kai's eyes as he watches Micah holding on to my wrist. Now instead of the fear I'd just felt, I only feel Kai's eyes on me. I don't know much besides the fact that he's incredible in the courtroom, and he can turn me on with a tilt of his head, but there is one thing I know for sure right now, and it's that Kai isn't going to stand back and let anyone hurt me.

That safety blanket makes me bold.

"How about you get your fucking hands off me? You wanted me to take this shit show of a case, and I did. You will not dictate how I work it. If you have a problem with it, I'll step down." I stare into Micha's eyes and wait for the appropriate emotional response.

Anger.

Remorse.

Frustration.

That's not what I get. In fact, Micha's response is so startling I shirk back. He laughs, a soft chuckle at first, before he lets go of my arm and holds on to his gut.

"Oh Marcella, you naive little girl. What makes you think you have an option here? Win this case and do it quickly." He doesn't threaten me, but the danger is clear in his crazed eyes.

Kai was right, this will not be an easy win to walk away with. Instead of it being about the case though I'm starting to think I need to be more concerned with walking away with my life.

CHAPTER NINE

KAI

I knew that I wasn't going to have much of a problem making sure that Dyer stayed out on bail, but I wasn't expecting for Marcella to basically help me with it. Something was off with that entire situation, and I intend to find out what's really going on.

"Man, I can't tell you how fucking grateful I am that you were able to help me out." Dyer says as we walk out of the courtroom. He reaches over to shake my hand.

"You know me, I'm always looking to build up my favors. Who knows, next time, it might be me calling you in the middle of the night." I joke with him and he just smirks.

"Whatever the fuck you need, man. I'm here for you." He looks off to the side and I see Christine waiting for him by the corner

"I'm assuming you two haven't let the cat out of the bag yet?" I clench my jaw not because I'm bothered by the fact that the two of them are together, but when it comes to a court case, the best thing to do at all times is to make sure that everyone is being honest about everything. The last thing we need right now is for someone else to come up and say that one of them is lying.

"Nah, man, not yet. We're going to." Dyer looks away from me. I don't know if he's ashamed of the relationship or the fact that they seem to be keeping it a secret like a couple of underage teenagers.

"Bro, none of this shit is my business, but if you ask me, keeping the fact that you're messing around with Christine from Travis and Cory for much longer is going to look like you got something else intended for her. If you're really trying to be with her, respectfully and exclusively, they'll be pissed, but I'm sure they'll get over it. Don't make things worse for the both of you. Especially now that you're in the middle of this shit. " I gesture with my thumb to the courtroom doors. "None of this is going to look good for you if they have to find out on their own."

"Fuck man, I know I just don't want to be the reason she's at war with them. I'm going to let them all know, though. That's first on my list." He admits and I shake my head no.

"The first thing you'll do is make sure you stay the fuck out of trouble." I raise an eyebrow at him, just to make sure he takes my warning.

"Yeah man, that too." He brushes it off, and if I didn't already know just how badly Rhett wanted to stay out of Reese's shoes, I'd be worried that I'd be back in the courtroom with him much sooner than I need to be.

Dyer reaches out and shakes my hand again before he walks off to be with Christine.

I parked in the back lot of the courthouse, only because those doors are closer to this side of the building. I've been in and out of here so much I know where each room is by memory. I push open the back doors and see, the prosecutor, Marcella standing at my car with her hands folded over her chest and looking down at her feet.

This isn't the bulldog I just encountered in the courtroom, something is wrong.

"Marcella?" I call out for her and her head jerks up in shock.
