With wide eyes, she looks around for a second before she pulls her shoulders back and makes her way over to me.

"I need to speak with you." She says, and I know better than to get into another debate with her about what Dyer or didn't do, at this point we're better off just letting the judge decide who's telling the truth.

"We did all the talking we're going to do a few moments ago in front of the judge. I'll speak with you when the case reconvenes, counselor." I nod once and try to walk around her.

"Wait, Kai." She grabs hold of my arm to stop me, and I look down at it in surprise. It's not that she’s holding me tightly or that this could be considered physical assault, but because of how hard she's shaking. "I need to talk to you." She says again slower, as if she's really wanting me to understand the words that are coming out of her mouth. The hidden meaning between the lines.

"As you wish, shall we set something up for this evening?"

"No... I..." She takes a step back and crosses her arms over her chest, again closing herself off as she tries to find the right words to say. "I can't believe I'm about to say this." She mutters, and I move in closer to hear what she's saying, clearly.

"What? What do you want?"

When she looks back up at me, along with the shame I also see fear in her eyes, but fear of what. Before I can ask her, I'm shocked silent by the words that come out of her mouth next.

"Can I come home with you?"

I was right when I thought something more was happening in that courthouse. Marcella looks over her shoulder before she turns back to wait for my answer. I follow her gaze, but see no one behind her.

The woman is scared and is coming to me for help. Sure, it could all be a ploy of some kind to get me to drop out of the case, but from this look in her eyes, I'm really doubtful that's the reason.

I'm worried I may be going a little too soft on Marcella. She's supposed to be my opponent, and I never give my opponents a chance to talk. In both fighting and the courtroom, I take them out with very little mercy.

I go over the pros and cons of inviting her back to my home.

If I find out this is all some trick, I'll just kick her out. If I'm not scared of her in the courtroom, there's no reason I should be scared of her in my own home.

I'll keep my wits about me and once and for all get to the bottom of this.

CHAPTER TEN

MARCELLA

The entire ride back over to Kai's house, I'm too shaken to even tell him what's going on. I just want to get off the street and some place I know Micha can't get to me.

I hope, at least.

After asking me twice what I needed to talk about in the car, Kai finally realized that I wasn't going to say anything while we were in transit. He allowed me to have my peace and has been nothing but a gentleman since we pulled up to his place.

He walks around and opens my door before putting a hand out to help me up from my seat.

"Such a gentle man." I say jokingly.

"I have to be something other than an asshole." He replies right away.

That quick wit. I'd really like to see him in an open court. It must be a sight to see.

We walk to the front door of his home and I stand right behind him as he digs his keys out and unlocks the front door.

I take a chance and glance around the area just to make sure that no one has been following us.

"There's no one there." He says, and I quickly whip my head back around. I didn't realize he was turned around and looking at me.

"Sorry, just making sure." I mutter before I walk into his house.

He reaches for my jacket and hangs it on the hook by the door, while he takes his off and hangs it on a hook next to mine.

"Have a seat, I'll pour us some coffee."
