Page 4 of Facing Kai

Oh sweet Jesus, yes! Finally, a challenge. Kai Yang is basically a living legend already in his young career. The man has yet to lose a case, and from what I've heard, he's so meticulous and thorough that most people don't know they've lost their case until it's too late.

I'm going to the first one to bring the baby faced law legend to his knees, and I can't fucking wait.

With a big smile on my face, I gleam at Micha, "Now, this is the fight I've been looking for."

CHAPTER THREE

KAI

The time is late at night when I finally decide to try to get my eyes shut so that I can get some rest. I always have a hard time sleeping after a fight because my mind just keeps replaying what I had done, and how I could do things differently next time.

An hour of tossing and turning lets me know sleep isn't going to happen, so I get dressed and go to Travis' gym.

Instead of going to sleep, I work out there. The truth is, I like coming here because he doesn't question me about what my mind needs to finally shut down.

All I really want to do is relax, but I can't because my phone starts to ring at that exact moment.

I recognize the number only because I've had quite a few clients call me from lock up.

In response, I answer with a huff, hurling my bag as I walk up to the bench in the locker room.

"Yang, it’s Rhett Dyer. I’ve been arrested for a robbery that I didn’t commit, and I’m at the station downtown. I could use your services."

It's crazy to think I would get a phone call from Dyer. Sure, he's rough around the edges, but he usually stays out of trouble, and he's trying to avoid falling into his brother's footsteps. I appreciate the fact that he's being straight to the point about the matter. He's saying he didn't do it, and I'm inclined to believe him to a certain extent.

Innocent until proven guilty and all that jazz.

"Give me twenty minutes, and I'll be there." I respond and I hear him sigh with relief. I wonder if he thought I'd tell him no.

I'm not a fan of working with people I'm familiar with because they seem to believe that because I know them, it means that I will take the case. But Dyer, I get the sense that he is out there in a bad way if he's calling out for me. Moreover, I like the idea that he will owe me a favor.

* * *

After my meeting with Rhett, I couldn't believe the gall of the detectives and the other officers who tried to pin this robbery on him. After speaking with him though I can understand how the authorities were quick to bring him in. He didn't want to say much about his alibi. Even though he didn't say it for sure, I'm pretty sure he and Christina got something going on that they're not supposed to have going on.

Either way, that's none of my business.

I'm here to make sure he's not charged for something he didn't actually do. After I do my due diligence, I find out that the prosecution has some information that they believe will implicate Rhett. As his lawyer, it's my job to find out what she knows and go from there.

Just as I go to put in the request for him to get bail, I realize that we won't be able to until the morning. Apparently, my opposing counselor wants to air her grievances. Silly woman. Luckily for me, I won't have to wait that long.

I'm able to meet her at my office to consult. I've heard good things about her work ethic, but that's as much as I know about her. When she walks in wearing fitted pants and a button down paisley shirt, I'm surprised by just how beautiful she is. For whatever reason, her beauty is never something the other lawyers talk about. I'm going to guess that's because they are more worried about her kicking their asses in the courtroom.

"Ms. Johansen." I stand and put my hand out for her to shake. She does so firmly.

"Mr. Yang. A pleasure." She replies.

"Please, have a seat." I gesture to the open chair in front of her, and she places her briefcase down on the floor right beside her.

"So shall we get right to business?" She asks and lifts her chin to look at me. "It's obvious that I can't let your man put in for bail. He's a severe flight risk."

I'm startled by her no nonsense attitude, so far, she's nothing like the majority of lawyers that I've come across. At least not the younger ones. The younger ones all want to play mind games and attempt to be a comrade instead of someone who's trying to beat me in the courtroom. Her cold tone of voice did not take away from how hot she was.

Shaking my head, I look down for a second, startled by my mind's train of thoughts. I'm shocked that I feel any sort of arousal towards Marcella at all. As the counselor that I'll be potentially going up against in court, I know she's completely off limits. Yet, something about her curvaceous body, neat dark hair and light-brown eyes is sending my libido for a tailspin.

Focus. Stay focused.

I push down my attraction for her and raise my eyes to hers. "A flight risk? My client is no flight risk, besides I think he'd be more than happy to give up his passport until we get everything cleared up."
