Page 6 of Facing Kai

"Hey, China man, I hear you make awesome fortune cookies."

I hold my breath as I slowly get to my knees and look through my window to see what's going on. Kai turns around, and I see two men in all black closing in on him. Oh god, they're going to hurt him.

"Yeah, you want to hear yours? It ends up with you in the hospital if you continue on the path you're on." Kai says in a calm voice.

What the hell is he doing? There's no one else around, and he's out numbered. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like one of them has a knife in their hand. This is going to get very bad for him.

"Wow, that's remarkable because that's precisely what your fortune says about you. In fact, we're here to put you on the fast track to your fate." The one to the right says a moment before he rushes Kai. The one to the left doesn't hesitate. He runs at Kai at the same moment.

I open my mouth to scream out and tell him to be careful, but it's too late. I watch in horror as I stay in my kneeled position staring through the window of my car as the both of them jump on Kai. One of them pulls out a crow bar and swings it down against Kai's back.

"Fuck!" he cries out from the impact, and I finally feel the life coming back to my legs. I can't just let him get hurt like this. I may not be Xena fucking warrior princess, but I took a few self defense classes. He quickly grapples with the man in front of him and dodges out of the way just as the one behind him swings the pointed edge of the crowbar in his direction. It cracks the windshield of the car they are standing in front of. A spiderweb of small lines form on the glass from the impact.

I move forward even faster as Kai jumps up and kicks the one in front of him in the chest. An impressive move I've only seen done in martial arts movies.

Well, hello, Mr. Oh So Sexy Van Damme.

Kai puts a hand up to block the second man swinging the crow bar, and I catch eyes with the first one still on the floor. He sees me and his eyes go wide.

Instead of going back to Kai, he starts to back away. "You don't want to walk down this road." the man in the dark hoodie says to Kai while he's still busy fighting the other attacker that is holding the crowbar. I get to the two of them just as Kai elbows the one in front of him, causing him to stumble backwards holding his nose as blood seeps between his fingers.

Just as I get close enough to Kai to hear him sucking in huge lungfuls of breath, he swings around and wraps his hand around my neck lifting me clear off the floor. My eyes bulge and I reach up to grab hold of his wrist, but I don't dig my nails in. I rushed him as he was being attacked, of course he's on edge right now.

His eyes register who he's looking at, and he drops me. "Shit! Are you okay? I'm sorry. Did I hurt you?" He asks, his hands reaching for me again, but this time not with angry purpose.

"I'm okay…" I cough, and rub a hand along my neck, "Are you okay? I saw them attack you."

His jaw snaps shut, and I can almost feel the tension radiating off him. I don't know what the hell that was about, but he didn't seem like he wanted to talk about it.

"I'll live." That's the only answer that I'll get from him. His eyes scan the area, and I hear him groan deep in his throat when his gaze lands on the car they were fighting near. One of the tires is flat and the windshield is cracked horribly.

"Is that your car?" I ask.

"Yeah, I'm going to have to call a tow service. I can't drive it like that."

"I agree." Suddenly, the cool night air hits me with a chill and I find myself shivering slightly. I don't really want to be about here while he waits for the tow truck to show up, but I don't want to leave him out here on his own either. What if those bastards come back or something like that. He did well just now, but I don't know for sure that they aren't going to come back for him. "Since it's already getting late, it's probably not a good idea to be sitting out here alone. My car is right there, I can drop you off. Unless you think the tow truck or police are going to be here any minute, maybe you should get off the street."

His mouth tightens into a hard line. "You don't need to do that. I can take a cab." He says, but for some reason I don't really think he wants me to go along with what he says. I feel like he wants me to insist.

"I know you can, but it would make me feel a lot better to know that you walked into your house safely." I nod my head once. My legs nearly turn to jelly when he tilts his head to the side and gives me a steamy smirk.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were concerned about me?" He mutters.

Good lord, the way he talks. Mmhmm.

I brush off my teenage butterflies and place my hands on my hips, "Of course I'm concerned for you. I'm human, and what you went through just now was very traumatic."

"Traumatic? I think that's a bit of an overstatement. I don't feel very traumatized." He runs his hands over his body and my eyes follow the path. I wish it were my hands instead of his. "No, not one bit of me is traumatized."

With a sudden lack of judgment, I snap my hand out to grab his. The gesture surprises the both of us. I don't freeze though, instead I turn his hands over so I can see his knuckles and I rub my thumb across the battered skin. "This looks like trauma to me."

He doesn't say a word, just stares at me like an animal ready to attack.

Those butterflies I shooed away come back with a fierceness, and I find myself leaning closer to him. I wonder what happens if I poke the lion.

The sound of a tractor trailer blowing its horn in the distance knocks me out of my spell and I let his hand go. "So, you going to be difficult and make me wait out here with you, or are you going to let me help you out?"

He sighed, "As you wish." He pulls out his phone and starts taking photos of his car and the surrounding area. He makes a few phone calls and even though I don't bother to listen to what he's saying, I take notice of how confident and sure he is. How completely unrattled he is.
