There’s a kayak rental place next door and I start to think about his routine more.

“It might be a drive but you could go kayaking or paddle boarding once or twice a week? Something to be close to the water and get some fresh air.”

“Maybe,” he says as we head down the sidewalk a bit.

Destiny Falls isn’t very big and in no time, we’re back at the car.

“Lilac Harbor? Or do you want to head back home?” I ask him.

“Whatever you want.”

I turn the car toward Lilac Harbor. We cruise along the water and I sneak glances at it whenever I get the chance.

“Have you thought about moving down here? I get that it’s nice to be so close to family, but maybe being by the water would be better? And you’d only be like half an hour away from them.”

“I like being by Patrick and Brennan. Besides, Patrick bought the house for me.”

“That was nice of him.”

He nods as we pass by a newly opened restaurant.

“Are you hungry? We could try this place.”

“Sure, unless you want to eat all of the cupcakes and bread.”

I turn into the parking lot and he grins at me. I think that it’s the first time that I’ve seen him look so boyish and happy.

Maybe all of the fresh air is wearing off on him.

We head inside Fenders and a hostess greets us right away. I’m too busy looking around at the place to notice all of the looks that Heath is getting, but I catch on when we sit down and I see how tense his shoulders are.

“Do you want to leave?” I whisper.

“No, it’s fine. I need to get used to it.”

I frown, wanting to argue with him, but he’s probably right.

None of the looks are bad. More like curious, and I do my best to ignore them as I look over the menu.

“The burgers look so good,” I say, practically drooling, and he nods.

“Grab one for me? The bacon cheeseburger with a Coke.”

“Sure,” I say as he makes his way out of the booth and heads toward the bathrooms.

I want to follow him and make sure that he’s alright but I’m getting the feeling that he needs a minute alone.

“Hey, welcome to Fenders. Can I get you something to drink?” our waiter asks and I force a smile at him.

“Two Cokes please. Can we also get two of the bacon cheeseburgers with fries?”

“Sure thing. I’ll be right back with your drinks.”

He winks at me before he leaves and I smile slightly at him as he turns to head to the back.

I wait a few more minutes but Heath still isn’t back, so I slip out of the booth and head to the restrooms.

“Heath?” I call, knocking on the door.
