“Thanks,” I whisper and he nods.

“I’ll get you their numbers tomorrow. First thing,” he promises. “Some of them aren’t covered by your insurance but if you like them, I’ll cover the cost.”

“You don’t have to do that. I have savings,” I argue.

“I want to, Heath.”

I study him and see the emotion in his eyes.

“God, it’s been so good to have you around. I missed you, man.”

My throat constricts and I swallow hard.

“I missed you too.”

“Then let me help you.”

I nod and we turn to watch as Corrine and Brennan bring the cupcakes from this morning out to us.

“It’s like a nighttime picnic,” Corrine says with a wide smile and I feel my own lips tilting up.

She’s so full of life and optimism, even after everything that happened in her shitty childhood.

I had wanted to ask her more about what she said this morning, about what she seems to be leaving out when she talks about them, but by the time we got back from signing up at the gym, Patrick and Brennan were waiting out front.

I haven’t forgotten though. I’ll be asking her about it tonight once they leave.

I paste on a smile and laugh with them as we finish off the cupcakes and talk about plans for this weekend. It all seems so mundane and I didn’t realize how much I missed this. I was always on when I was in the military. Constantly aware of my surroundings and analyzing those around me. It’s nice to not have to do that anymore.

“See you tomorrow!” Corrine calls as we wave to Brennan and Patrick.

“See you!” Brennan calls back as he runs across the grass and up the steps to their house.

“Ready for bed?” she asks me as I close the door and I shake my head.

“Not yet.”

“Oh? Did you have something else in mind?” she asks as she wraps her arms around my neck.

“Yeah. I want to talk about what you said this morning.”

“That is… not what I had in mind,” she says, her arms loosening from around my neck.

“I thought that we were opening up to each other,” I remind her and she walks over to the couch.

“Are you going to tell me about the accident or whatever led to this?” she challenges and I nod.

“If you want.”

“I do.”

“Okay, you first,” I say as I take a seat next to her.

“There’s not much more to add. Everything that I told you before was true. My mom did abandon me. I did live with my grandparents and then her again after they died.”

I nod, urging her to go on.

“What did you leave out?” I ask.
