I need to talk to Heath.

I head out to the living room and smile as Patrick waves at me and heads out the door.

“Ready to go?” Heath asks and I grab the keys before he can try to take them.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

We climb into the car and start the short drive in silence. I think that Heath can pick up on my change in mood because he keeps glancing over at me and frowning.

“We should have gotten you a membership,” he comments as I pull into the parking lot. “It might be boring for you to hang around.”

“I’m not sure that I could commit to the six-month membership,” I tell him, and he glances at me sharply.

“What?”

“I, uh, I need to talk to you about something,” I start.

“Okay.”

He turns in his seat to face me and I run my hands up and down my legs, trying to gain the courage to tell him that I don’t want to leave.

“My boss called. They have my next job lined up.”

“What?” he asks, he looks shocked by this news.

Could he not have known how long I was going to be here for?

“I was only supposed to be here for two weeks to get you set up,” I clarify and he frowns.

“So, you’re leaving next week.”

I nod, not knowing what to say. I was hoping that he would tell me that he wants me to stay, but deep down I guess I knew that that happening was far-fetched.

A group comes out of the gym, laughing and teasing each other and Heath clears his throat.

“Guess we should head in.”

He opens the door, grabs his water bottle and cane, and climbs out and I hurry to follow him.

I wish that he would have said something else, given me some sign or indication about what he was feeling.

As I follow my grumpy guy inside the gym though, I can’t say that I’m surprised that he didn’t bare his soul.

Just disappointed.

ELEVEN

Heath

One more week.

That’s all that I have left with Corrine. Unless I can do something to make her stay. I know that I should have said something to her in the car, but my mind just blanked when I thought about her taking a new job.

I can’t let her leave.

I’ve been panicking about the thought of her no longer being part of my life all day. We barely said anything while I was at the gym and the car ride home was painfully silent.

I want to tell her to stay, but then what? Will she give up her job to move in with me? What can I really offer her here? Besides me, that is.
