She beams at me as she passes past me and heads inside, and I take one last deep breath before I follow after her.

My hands shake slightlyas I wheel my suitcase in behind me.

I wasn’t expecting him to be so attractive. When I first got told about this job, I figured that it would be some older man, especially when I was told that he was a veteran. This guy isn’t old at all. In fact, he looks like he’s only a few years older than I am.

His chocolate brown hair is still cut pretty close to his scalp, a dead giveaway that he’s military, or was military. He’s got the most fascinating bluish, green eyes. There’s almost a teal color and so bright that my eyes are constantly drawn there.

He follows after me, his cane tapping awkwardly on the hardwood floors as he ambles into the living room area.

“So, listen,” he starts and my stomach drops at the tone of his voice. “I don’t really need a home caregiver. My brother hired one for me, but I’m fine.”

My eyes look down at his cane and the heavy way that he’s leaning on it.

“Are you sure?” I ask and I look up into his scowling face.

“I’m sure,” he grits out and I just nod.

I can’t believe that this is happening. This is my first day as a home caregiver. Heath is supposed to be my first job and I’m in desperate need of money and a place to stay.

I don’t have a backup plan. Getting hired at Home4You was a miracle. I get paid and a place to stay which takes care of my two most pressing issues. If I go back to my boss and tell them that I got fired on my first day, I doubt that they’ll keep me on.

I need to make this work.

“Look, I’ll be honest with you. You’re my first home caregiver job and I really need it. If I go back and say that you didn’t need me on my first day, they’ll fire me for sure.”

He looks away from me, and I miss having those eyes on me.

“You might not need me,” I say. “But I really need you. I don’t have any other options.”

He sighs and I know in that moment that I’ve got him. He won’t kick me out today at least.

“I can give you a few days. That will help get my brother off of my back too,” he admits and I smile at him.

“Good, then we can help each other out.”

“You can take one of the rooms upstairs. I don’t know what they look like, so pick whichever one you want.”

“Shouldn’t I be closer to you?” I ask and he studies me for a moment.

“I’m down here, but I’ll be fine.”

I nod and then take my suitcase with me as I head down the hallway. I can hear him growl behind me and for some reason that sound sends shivers down my spine. I’m not afraid of him though. It’s more… sensual than that.

I ignore that and head into the first room. It’s a bedroom and I can see some personal items on the dresser, so I’m assuming that it’s his room. There are not that many personal touches here or out in the living room. At least not that I saw. There were a few framed pictures on the mantel and some body wash and shampoo on the dresser here.

I close the bedroom door and turn across the hall to try that room instead. There’s only a bed and a dresser in here and I wheel my suitcase in.

“I’ll take the room across from yours so I’m close by!” I call back to him and I hear him grumble something but don’t catch what he says.

I set my suitcase up by the dresser and look around. There’s a closet on one wall and the bed and dresser are on the other side. The walls are painted the same pale green as the rest of the house. I like it. It’s calming.

I look around the room, wondering what I should do now. I could put my clothes away in the dresser, but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I might not be here for much longer.

I take a deep breath and head back out to join Heath in the living room.
