I wish that he could have still been here with us. I wish that I would have been around to help Patrick with Brennan more after the funeral. I tried to apologize for that after the accident but Patrick wouldn’t hear of it. He said that he understood but he doesn’t.

“Dig in!” Corrine says as she carries over the casserole dish of macaroni and cheese and sets it next to the grilled cheese.

She smiles at Brennan and asks him where he learned the recipe as we all take our seats.

Maybe having her around won’t be so bad. She can distract everyone else so that I can be left alone.

I add some macaroni and cheese and a grilled cheese to my plate and listen as Corrine and Brennan talk about favorite foods and recipes.

“Have you ever had Huli Huli chicken?” she asks him excitedly and he shakes his head.

“No, what is it?”

“It’s a Hawaiian recipe. This place by my old house used to make it and it was delicious. Almost as good as your mac and cheese,” she says, and I can see Brennan blush under her praise.

“What’s in it? Maybe we can make it,” he suggests.

“Let’s look.”

Corrine pulls out her phone and Brennan and her lean over the screen, searching for the recipe.

“How’s she working out?” Patrick asks me quietly and I shrug.

I probably shouldn’t tell him that I tried to make her leave when she first got here. Especially since I promised him that I’d give her a chance.

“She’s fine,” I say and he studies me.

“So, you’re keeping her on then?”

I can hear the hint of hope in his voice and I nod again.

“At least for a few days. Until I get settled.”

He grins at me, and I bite back my sigh as I go back to eating.

“We can run to the store. Maybe we can make it this weekend,” Corrine says to Brennan and he nods excitedly.

“Can we?” he asks Patrick and he nods too.

“Sure, just tell me what we need to get.”

I eat in silence, listening to them making plans. That’s what I should be doing. I need to figure out a new routine, to at least pretend to be alright so that I can get Corrine out of my life and Patrick off of my back.

“Why don’t we go to the grocery store tomorrow morning,” I suggest and everyone stares at me in shock.

“Really?” Corrine asks, looking like it’s some kind of trap.

“Sure. You were just saying that we should explore the town a bit. We can go drive around a little and then stop at the store on the way back. It will be nice to stretch my legs,” I lie and she beams at me.

“Okay. Want to come make it for dinner tomorrow?” she asks Brennan and he nods.

We clear our plates and Corrine stands. She grabs my dishes before I can stop her and carries them over to the sink.

“I could have got them,” I grumble and she rolls her eyes.

“I think you mean thank you.”

I glare at her, and she glares right back.
