I’m an idiot.

Or maybe I just have a thing for damaged bad boys.

I’ve been trying to figure out which one it is since last night.

I can’t believe that I almost joined him in the shower!

I sneak a peek at Heath as he sits in the passenger seat, his mouth turned down in a scowl and his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

He’s mad that I wouldn’t let him drive. I know that he’s stubborn and independent from spending one day with him, but I still wasn’t expecting such a fight when I slid into the passenger seat.

“That place looks cool,” I say, nodding to a bakery.

“Uh-huh,” he grunts and I roll my eyes.

“I see that we’re back to communicating through sounds and snide looks then, huh?”

“Uh-huh,” he repeats again and I can’t bite back my smile.

Most people would think that Heath was a jerk but I know better. I can see how much pain he’s in, and I know what pain does to people. It makes them irritable and cranky. I just wish that there was some way to help him.

“Did you want to get out a walk for a bit?” I ask as we turn left at a stoplight.

He frowns, his hand almost reflexively going to his left thigh and rubbing. I want to ask him if he’s alright, if he needs anything, but I know that he would just snap at me, so I keep my mouth shut and keep driving.

We’re meant to be out exploring Honey Peak but really, we’ve just been driving around for the last ten minutes. I’m pretty sure that we’ve seen all of town by now. It’s not a very big city, so I knew that it wouldn’t take us long, but I guess I thought it would at least be an hour.

“Are you hungry? We never had breakfast so we could stop and grab something,” I suggest.

“Sure.”

I smile as I steer the car into a parking lot right next to a little coffee shop café.

I hop out of the car and round the hood to help Heath, but he gives me a warning look so instead I just stand there, leaning on the car as he grabs his cane and stands.

“It smells good,” I remark as I breathe in the scent of fresh brewed coffee and bacon.

Heath just nods and I hold the door open for him as we head inside. The place is almost empty and I’m not surprised. We’re between meals and most people are probably at work by now.

“What looks good?” I ask him and he just shrugs again, so I turn to peruse the menu.

I decide on a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant with a hash brown on the side and an Americano to drink.

“Ready to order?” I ask Heath but I don’t bother to wait for his shrug before I go up to the counter.

I list off my order and Heath gets the same but with a black coffee instead. He pays before I can stop him or argue, and I wait until we’ve found a table before I thank him.

“I can buy us lunch,” I say, and he waves me off.

“It’s fine.”

“Are you going to get a new job soon?”

He shrugs, staring out the front window for a moment and I study him. He looks tired and I wonder if he got much sleep last night. I didn’t hear him moving around but I was so tired that I fell asleep before my head could even hit the pillow.

“Do you miss it?” I ask and he turns back to me. “The military.”

“Yes.”
