He nods and pulls into the spot. He parks and looks around with a frown, and I hop out. That just makes him frown harder and I realize that he must like opening doors for me.

“It was just one door, Charming,” I remind him and he reaches past me, grabbing all of the groceries out of the back.

I lead the way down the little trail there, but soon the trail starts to get harder to follow with the overgrowth.

“I’m surprised that you’re not worried about the raccoons,” Jonah says as we wander through the woods.

“I didn’t even think about them,” I admit, my footsteps starting to slow as I look around.

The sun is setting and it’s getting harder to see, especially here in the woods.

“Where’s this great picnic spot?” he asks me and I look around.

“Um, it’s just right up here,” I lie.

There has to be a good spot around here somewhere, right?

We walk for a few more minutes in silence and I’m about to say that maybe we should turn around when Jonah wraps his hand around my arm and jerks me back.

“Whoa!” I say with a gasp and he pulls me farther back.

“Careful,” he says and I look around.

I don’t know how he can see. It’s practically pitch black out here.

“Is there a raccoon?” I whisper and he chuckles.

“No, but you were about to walk off the edge of that cliff.”

He grabs his phone and shines the light in front of us, and I gasp again when I realize that he’s right.

“Oh, right. That.”

“I seem to spend a lot of time wandering around in the dark ever since I met you,” he says and I can hear the smile in his voice.

“It’s all part of the experience,” I quip and he laughs.

The sound roll over my skin, leaving goose bumps in its wake. I don’t know what it is about Jonah, but I like him. I barely know him, but I trust him. I know that he could be important to me.

“So, I don’t really have a special place. I also have no idea where I’m going,” I admit as I turn to face him.

“I figured that out about ten minutes in,” he says back and I swat his arm.

“And you just let me walk into this raccoon-infested forest anyway.”

“I wanted to see what you would do,” he says and I see one of his big shoulders lift in a shrug.

“I guess we should head back to the car,” I say and he reaches out, taking my hand in his.

I let him lead us back. I have no idea how he knows where to go because I’m all turned around but fifteen minutes later we reach his car.

He helps me into the passenger seat and hands me the bags of food before he rounds the car and climbs behind the wheel.

“Why did you suggest a picnic?” he asks as he starts to unpack the food.

“I didn’t know where else to go. You just seemed so tense and uncomfortable at Margherite’s. I wanted you to have fun with me,” I say and I look over at him.

He’s staring at me and I would give anything to be able to tell what he was thinking right now.
