I wonder why?

“Thanks,” Jonah says as they continue to thank him and the relaxed guy who picked me up fifteen minutes ago with a bouquet of flowers is long gone.

I glance over to the entrance and I can see a small group gathered there. They’re going to stop him and thank him too. I must realize it at the same time as Jonah because he tenses even more, his breathing starting to come out shallow.

He really doesn’t want to deal with all of this and honestly, I don’t want our first date to keep getting interrupted.

“Hey, Charming?” I say, tugging on his shirt sleeve until he looks at me. “I’ve got somewhere a little more private in mind. You game?”

He stares at me for a beat and then nods and I can see how grateful he is that I’m not asking him to go in there.

“Come on,” I say, tugging on his arm.

He opens the car door for me again and I scramble to come up with something else for us to do tonight. I was bluffing when I said that I had somewhere else in mind. I only just moved here and I don’t really know the area. It can’t be that hard to find someplace a little less crowded though, right?

“Take a left,” I tell him and he turns out of the parking lot onto Main Street.

We drive for a few minutes and when we’re almost to the road that leads down the mountain, I know that I need to figure something out.

“In here,” I tell him and he turns into the parking lot of the Fallen Peak Market.

He doesn’t say anything or ask me any questions as we head inside. It isn’t until we pass the summer aisle that I get an idea.

“How do you feel about picnics?” I ask him, leading him over to the deli.

“I’ve never been on one. Aren’t they usually done when the sun is still out?” he asks and I look over at the front windows.

He’s right. The sun is already starting to set, but if we hurry, we should be able to find a spot to set up and we can use the car headlights to see.

“It’s more romantic at night,” I inform him, and he just gives me a look.

We go to the prepared food section and I debate between a turkey sandwich and the ham.

“What are you hungry for?” I ask him and he grabs a turkey and a ham sandwich and adds it to our basket.

“What else do we need?” he asks.

“Um… drinks! Drinks and candy.”

“Candy?”

“Or whatever you want for dessert.”

“Lead the way.”

We spend the next ten minutes wandering around the store and filling our shopping basket. By the time we check out, we’ve grabbed sandwiches, four different boxes of candy, a few bottles of Coke, and some potato salad.

Jonah pays and insists on carrying everything out to the car. He sets it in the back seat and then opens my door for me.

“Where to now?”

“Back toward your place,” I tell him and he nods.

I have no idea where to tell him to stop, but he lives closer to the woods than my apartment, so there has to be a spot around there somewhere.

We drive and when we pass the spot where my car broke down, I know that we’re close to his place.

“You can park right over there,” I say, spotting a little turn-off area.
